Hades (Demonica Series #11.5) by Larissa Ione

Author                                    Larissa Ione
Publication Date                   26 May 2015
Genre                                      Adult Paranormal Romance
Rating                                      5 *****

A fallen angel with a mean streak and a mohawk, Hades has spent thousands of years serving as Jailor of the Underworld. The souls he guards are as evil as they come, but few dare to cross him. All of that changes when a sexy fallen angel infiltrates his prison and unintentionally starts a riot. It’s easy enough to quell an uprising, but for the first time, Hades is torn between delivering justice — bestowing or mercy — on the beautiful female who could be his salvation…or his undoing.

Thanks to her unwitting participation in another angel’s plot to start Armageddon, Cataclysm was kicked out of Heaven and is now a fallen angel in service of Hades’s boss, Azagoth. All she wants is to redeem herself and get back where she belongs. But when she gets trapped in Hades’s prison domain with only the cocky but irresistible Hades to help her, Cat finds that where she belongs might be in the place she least expected…

Having encountered Hades at various stages in the Demonica series, which happens to be one of my favourite PNR series and learning more about his true character is a real bonus.

Hades is a fallen angel who is the right wing man of Azagoth, the grim reaper and the big boss in Sheoul gra, the demon realm. Hades uses torture as his preferred method of punishment to those who breach the rules.

Cat short for Cataclysm is the fallen angel who helped towards initiating the apocalypse and now serving under Azagoth. Her main goal is to stay on the good side so that she can get back to heaven. The problem is that she lives up to her names! Catastrophe and curiosity.

She is attracted to Hades but he appears to be oblivious to her interest in him or is he? As they get to know each other in a platonic way to begin with , Hades starts opening up to her. Big Bad sexy as hell, Hades has a great sense of humour whilst enduring ongoing deprivation as punishment from Azagoth for something he did thousands of years ago. He finds himself attracted to Cat who is brave and courageous but cannot act on how he feels as she is forbidden fruit.

Another disaster looms on the horizon with Cat in the middle of it all and her life at risk. Just like that, she becomes Hades' Achilles heel. Can this disaster be averted? Will Azagoth relent on his ongoing punishment for Hades?

This novella is fast paced and full of humour even whilst there is conspiracy which could have disastrous consequences. I loved Cat's character and Hades' true self.

Blue Genes (The Story of Us Series - Into the Blue)

Author                              Sydney Jamesson

Genre                                Adult Contemporary Romance
Rating                                5 *****

Take the plunge with Beth Parker and be ready to fall
headfirst Into the blue …

“I promise. Wherever you are, Beth, I will always be with you," ~ AydenBlue Genes is the continuation of the bestselling trilogy, The Story of Us.

Handsome, media magnate, Ayden Stone came into Beth Parker’s life like a bolt out of the blue, introducing her to an extravagant lifestyle filled with promises, new experiences and sensual pleasures. Possessed by love, they have fulfilled a childhood dream to be man and wife, believing nothing can come between them ‘until death us do part.’

Having been tortured by tragic events involving angels and demons from their past, these star-crossed lovers are ready to start a new chapter in their lives. Now, family comes first.

But which family?

Time is running out! Difficult decisions must be made that will stretch their fated bond to its very limit. Unforeseen enemies are conspiring and about to test the very foundation of their relationship: trust.
Blue Genes is an emotional, adult fairy-tale that transcends the ordinary: a sensual, suspense filled story overflowing with love, laughter and a longing for a happy ever after.

But sometimes, longing just isn’t enough …

Ayden's and Beth's epic love story continues in Blue Genes.

Ayden is now aware of what happened to him at birth and of his true parentage. Not an easy thing to digest thirty two years later, not even for the delectable Mr Stone. What unravels is enough to anger anyone but Ayden Stone has his own plan of action.

Beth is her loving and supportive self who stands by her man, no matter what. When doubts creep in as to where she stands with these new revelations, the intensity of Ayden's love for her puts her mind at peace. Then they have their own good news and they couldn't be happier to have this wonderful surprise but, the past has a habit of rearing its ugly head. This adds more complications to the life they had already mapped out for themselves and threatens to shatter their happiness.

Some of the characters from the previous books bring more to the story than can be expected. I can't say that I could warm up to some of the new characters, least of all, Sofia! Jamie, on the other end is a breath of fresh air.

Blue Genes is full of surprises and emotions run high. The love between Ayden and Beth is stronger than ever but will they survive the newest developments? Blue Genes is another compulsive read from Ms Jamesson and I can't wait to see what will transpire in the next instalment.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

Sydney Jamesson is an English teacher by day and bestselling author of romance by night. She is nocturnal by nature and loves nothing more than staying up late, listening to music and being inspired to write. She has always scribbled things down; in her home is one enormous waste paper basket full of discarded phrases, opening lines and pieces of dialogue that have hit her like lightning in the middle of the night or whilst parked up at a set of traffic lights. Her bestselling trilogy, The Story of Us is available worldwide, and she's thrilled to continue Ayden Stone and Beth Parker's epic love story in her upcoming The Story of Us Series: Into the Blue.

Monsters have a way of following you.

Immersed in a new world at boarding school, Addy Buckley learns she’s not the only one with secrets. While trying to navigate the minefield of painful lies that seem to be rattling around her family’s past, she meets soft on the eyes and heavy on the heart, Napoleon Blake. When faced with the darkness, Addy must decide to cling to her new life and friends or let the monster carry her away. The choice is hers, sink or swim.

After losing her father in a flood, Addison moves from Missippi to Manchester to live with her aunt and uncle. She has to adapt to a new way of life after the childhood upbringing which has left her scarred. She has been home schooled until now and she doesn't look forward to meeting others in her own age group. Having friends is quite alien to her.

Addison finds a best friend in Julia who is her complete opposite. Napoleon aka Leo befriends her too and they have a comfortable friendship. She settles into her new life until she starts finding clues about her mother who died when she was very young. These clues lead to a whole set of facts bringing uncertainties and heartache. How will Addison cope with these new revelations?

Despite having been through a hard life, Addison exudes strength and kindness, even when she constantly has self doubts and unnecessary guilt. This story is full of twists and turns, the characters are quite complex but everything flows nicely.

I like the way Leo tries to keep things light even when the going gets tough. Julia is very unpredictable and likes things her own way most of the time. Then there is Miyaga who is an endearing character who ends up having to face his own demons. The uncle and aunt have to contend with some awkward, unpleasant and difficult situations.

Some of the contents in this story is very distressing but there is a very strong message behind it all. It's a very well written story suitable for young and mature adults.

My heart leaps into my throat, and time has lost meaning. The entire car leans up on two wheels as it travels to the left, rather than straight ahead. My body presses into my fathers, and I wish more than anything I could hold myself away from him. He reaches for the door handle, but his efforts are futile, as the water has already risen to his window. We continue to move with the current, until it completely picks up the car. The metal tomb flips and turns onto the drivers side door, snapping off the mirror. I dont think. I struggle to unbuckle my seatbelt with one hand, the weight of my body pulling the strap taut, and crank down the passenger window with the other. Like a seamless and rehearsed dance, everything happens perfectly. The window is down, the buckle releases its grasp, and I grab on to the edge of the open window. Using the edge of the steering wheel, and my headrest, I push myself up and out the opening.

The car slows, but its still moving with the flow of the water, rocking from side to side as the muffled sounds of metal scraping against the earth fill the vessel. Addy Mae, he cries up after me. Its a tone Ive never heard from him, or at least I dont recall. I look down at him; his eyes are wide with fear. I feel sorry for him, the need to help him overwhelming me.

I drop to my knees, readying myself to extend a hand. The car jerks unexpectedly, and I fall to my stomach, gripping the rim of the window for support. A cracking sound echoes from inside of the car. I look down to see a large rock has wedged itself firmly into the windshield, cracked glass splintering outward.

Goddamn it, Addy, you better get me the hell out of here, he shouts. There he is, I think. The father I know. My hand is halfway extended when I pause and pull it back. What the The windshield gives way, and the shards rush inward with a gush of water. His expression, his wordsthey all disappear in an instant, beneath the murky, churning waters.

Undefeated (Wayward Fighters #3) by JC Valentine

Genre                                   Contemporary Romance

Spencer Bradley ruins everything he touches. Addicted to gambling, he’s lied, cheated, and stolen to get what he wants. Now, in order to protect those he cares for, he’s keeping his distance. Rehab’s taught him a lot, but when his time runs out and he finds himself with nowhere to turn, he seeks help from the one person he’s capable of destroying.

Olivia Carter fell in love the day she met Spencer Bradley. Despite him being responsible for the downfall of his best friend’s career and landing himself in rehab, she can’t bring herself to stay away—even if it means risking her own recovery.

I haven't read the first two books in this series but this can be read as a standalone.

Olivia aka Liv is a tormented soul. Remnants from her childhood plague her life but she manages to hide her fears, insecurities and self doubts very well and tries to live a "normal" life. She is a hairdresser by day and works in a bar in the evenings.

Spencer is a tormented soul too. When he destroys his friendship with his best friend and walks away from Liv, he decides to seek help. Despite Liv's insecurities and her own destructive tendencies, she is determined to support Spencer as she knows only too well about the feelings of being unloved and unwanted. Spencer on the other end is intent on walking away from Liv, thinking that's the best course of action as he is not worthy of her love and affection.

The story of these two tormented souls is full of emotions and I found myself wanting for them to accept each other's help and make a life for themselves.

It's very well researched and beautifully written.

The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker

Author                           Virginia Boecker
Publication Date          2 June 2015
Genre                             Young Adult Paranormal Novel
Rating                             4 ****

The magic and suspense of Graceling meet the political intrigue and unrest of Game of Thrones in this riveting fantasy debut.

Your greatest enemy isn't what you fight, but what you fear.

Elizabeth Grey is one of the king's best witch hunters, devoted to rooting out witchcraft and doling out justice. But when she's accused of being a witch herself, Elizabeth is arrested and sentenced to burn at the stake.

Salvation comes from a man she thought was her enemy. Nicholas Perevil, the most powerful and dangerous wizard in the kingdom, offers her a deal: he will save her from execution if she can break the deadly curse that's been laid upon him.

But Nicholas and his followers know nothing of Elizabeth's witch hunting past--if they find out, the stake will be the least of her worries. And as she's thrust into the magical world of witches, ghosts, pirates, and one all-too-handsome healer, Elizabeth is forced to redefine her ideas of right and wrong, of friends and enemies, and of love and hate.

Virginia Boecker weaves a riveting tale of magic, betrayal, and sacrifice in this unforgettable fantasy debut.

Elizabeth is the only female witch hunter under King Malcolm's rule. He is anti witchcraft and anybody caught practising is burnt at stake.

Caleb is Elizabeth's close friend and they trained together to become witch hunters. In fact he is the one who persuaded her to undertake the intense training as he saw it as a way of achieving his ambition of getting out of of working in the kitchens.

They grew up without a family and always look out for each other. Blackwell is the inquisitor who devised and implemented this vigorous regime to fight against witchcraft. When Elizabeth is caught with some herbs, she is instantly accused of witchcraft and is condemned with no mercy. She is rescued by the most wanted wizard and this is where she starts getting confused, not knowing who quite to believe as the truth slowly unravels.

I like John who is the kind and considerate healer who has his own scars as a result of the witch hunters' actions. I like the parts both George and Fifer play in this story too. I didn't know quite what to expect from this book but I must admit that I found it quite compelling.

This would appeal to those who like a well put together and intriguing YA paranormal novel with an element of everything from greed to deceit to love and betrayal .

I received this ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Siren's Call (Dark Seas #3) by Debbie Herbert

Author                           Debbie Herbert
Publication Date          1 June 2015
Genre                             Paranormal Romance
Rating                            5*****

She was irresistible to every man…except one
Lily Borsage is the ultimate siren: gorgeous, aloof and irresistible to all the men in Bayou La Siryna. All of them, that is, until Nashoba Bowman comes back to town. The Native American kid whose innocent first kiss Lily remembers fondly is now all grown-up, hot as an Alabama summer and immune to Lily's charms. What self-respecting mermaid could resist finding out more?
But Nash has a dark history that puts any woman he loves in grave danger, and a heritage of power he isn't ready to accept. And Lily has a secret that no mortal man can ever know. When a mysterious enemy starts menacing Lily, they will both have to risk everything and embrace their deepest destinies if they want to survive.
Lily is the beautiful mermaid with a siren's voice which men are unable to resist. This has somewhat ruined her reputation in Bayou La Syrina. She appears to take it all in her strides even though she can't find the one thing she craves. Love!

Nash, a Choctaw Native American is a professional photographer who has an afinity with animals. He is Lily's long lost childhood friend and is on an assignment in this small town. When they bump into each other, he appears to be immuned to Lily's voice to her surprise. Nash tries to keep their friendship platonic due to some of the things which have happened to him in the past. Lily is worried that her reputation will act as a deterrent but it becomes apparent that there is more to their friendship when the chemistry between them becomes quite palpable. Then danger comes lurking around the corner.

It's nice to see Shelly, Jet and the rest of the family which makes the story even more credible.

Mrs Herbert adds another layer of supernatural with Nash having his own supernatural abilities which he is very reluctant to acknowledge.

I have loved all three books in this trilogy but one has to have a favourite right? This one is my favourite and I loved everything about this book.

I would recommend this trilogy to anybody who likes the supernatural with mystery, suspense and easy to read romance

I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
