Afterlife (Dark Angel Saga #6) by Hanna Peach

Author                           Hanna Peach
Publication Date          3 July 2016
Genre                              Paranormal Thriller Romance

Do you believe in soulmates?

Born and raised in Saint Joseph, Israel has watched all his friends leave this crumbling city for the opportunities of the outside world. He hasn’t left with them. Yet. He just can’t shake this feeling that he’s waiting for something…

On the other side of the city, Alyx’s perfectly-compatible, sufficiently-lovely boyfriend has just proposed. She should be deliriously happy. So why does she feel like she’s missing something…

It looks like Alyx and Israel are about to miss their chance. Until some old friends decide to secretly nudge destiny along − but their efforts almost destroy everything…

Now Alyx’s life lies in the balance, trapped in a DreamScape coma filled with riddles, monsters and inescapable mazes. Can Israel help her escape before it’s too late?

Although this book is set years after the Dark Angel saga, it can be read as a standalone. But be warned, there are spoilers.

Reading Afterlife is a real bonus after everything that happened in the previous book, Angeldust.

Alyx works in a museum. She has suffered some loss and is now preparing to get married to Daniel. She is aiming to "settling" even though she feels that there is something missing in her life.

Israel lives in the same city. He seems to just exist with the feeling that he is waiting for something to happen. He is not quite sure what it is though.

Baltazar, Vix and Jordan are old friends from Alyx's and Israel's previous life. They decide to put a plan together to help these two find whatever is missing in their lives. Interfering with fate is not always a wise thing to do and this brings about some alarming consequences. When Alyx and Israel are unknowingly brought together, they have this sense of recognition and familiarity which they are unable to explain. This is when tragedy strikes and takes us on an incredible journey.

Alyx is stuck in a DreanScape and will be lucky if she gets out of it alive. Israel ends up in the same place and together, they face some difficult hurdles. They also have to face their own fears which materialise when they are in fighting their way through a maze. One of enemy from the past puts obstacles in their way. Will they be able to get out of the DreamScape before it's too late? Will Alyx survive?

Afterlife is an excellent addition to the Dark Angel saga. It's full of action and danger. Israel has a great sense of humour and tries to make light out of things even when danger is lurking. Alyx is very quiet and reserved but Israel brings the best out of her. The interactions between Baltazar and Vix are pretty hilarious. It's interesting to see Israel and Alyx in a different light and the attraction between them leaves no doubt that they are soul mates. A very good read indeed. I have read all of the Dark Angel saga to date and would fully recommend to other readers.

I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hanna is the bestselling author of the Bound romantic suspense series and the Dark Angel fantasy series. Although she writes in more than one genre she can’t write a book without weaving together a complicated plot and filling it with twists. She writes what she believes: good people can do bad things, ordinary people can do great things, and choose love above everything.
Eternally restless, Hanna has lived in Indonesia, Australia, Germany, Scotland, England, Croatia and Ireland – everything she owns fits into one suitcase. She’s planning her next move with her gorgeous (and understanding) partner right now. If not writing, she can be found wandering a dusty market in Marrakesh or trekking a mountain in Peru, often using her travels as settings in her novels.

Seasons of Love and War (#1 Seasons of Love and War) by Brenda Ashworth Barry

Author                     Brenda Ashworth Barry
Publication Date    24 March 2014
Genre                       Historical Fiction Romance

SEASONS OF LOVE AND WAR is a historical family saga and epic love story. Childhood sweethearts Beth Ann Rose and Kaylob Shawn O’Brien just want to get married and pursue their dream careers, but the Vietnam War changes everything when Kaylob is drafted into the Army and declared dead. Beth Ann has a complete emotional melt down and starts to have visions of him in the jungles of Vietnam. Is he alive or has she completely lost her mind?

Seasons of Love and War is a very fitting title for this novel. I didn't know quite what to expect when I started reading but wow, what a story!

Kaylob is engaged to his childhood sweetheart and is none too happy when he is drafted to join the army in the Vietnam War. He witnesses a tragic occurrence and in his sorrow, he makes a promise to his best friend. This promise comes with a heavy price.

Beth Ann is an actress and a singer. She is longing for the return of her first and only love. Life without him is quite empty and realising their dream of forever and a day can't arrive soon enough.

After witnessing this tragedy, Kaylob returns home sooner than expected. Beth Ann is surprised and delighted at the same time. At long last they can now bring their dream to fruition and then Kaylob gives her the unexpected news that he has to go back to Vietnam. Beth Ann is devastated by the news but once she knows the reason why, she reluctantly comes to term with his decision. He is an honourable man who doesn't break his promises. They make the most of the time they have together before he departs. Their love for each other only intensifies even when they think that it couldn't get any stronger.

The time for Kaylob to go back arrives a little too soon. Saying goodbye once more is heartbreaking but there is the promise that the next reunion will be for good. Not long after, Kaylob goes missing and then presumed dead. Beth Ann goes into melt down as she doesn't know how to live without him. She also refuses to accept that he is not coming back. With the support of family and friends, she eventually tries to resume some form of normality. As time passes, she does her best to have a "normal" life. She gets a break in her career and at the same time someone from her past declares his undying love for her. She is very apprehensive about starting another relationship. The bond between Kaylob and Beth Ann materialises in the most fascinating and unusual way even though they are apart. She has to make a decision. Accept things as they are and move on or live in hope. Just when she makes her decision, along comes this twist.

The first part of this story is riveting. The ordeals that the loved ones have to go through whilst at war are very upsetting. The love of two soul mates is unmistakable. The love and support of family and friends is remarkable. There is unrequited love, confusion and anguish. The heartache is so palpable.

I have just finished reading this book and it has left me with quite intense feelings. What happens now?

I like the writing style and the way the author conveys the emotions. I would highly recommend this novel to romance lovers.

Review
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

This representation of Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) shows the extent of the effects on two different individuals. The triggers and the coping mechanisms are conveyed in a straightforward manner.

Grady is a war hero. The injuries caused by his bravery has left him with physical and psychological scars. He is foul mouthed but his intentions are good until he lapses in one of his flashbacks. He believes that he is only good for one night stands with porn stars. He doesn't have any hope of anyone seeing him for who he is instead of his scars.

Isa is a college student. She has been a famous and talented dancer. She too has faced a traumatic experience where she has to battle with her own demons.

When Grady and Isa have this chance encounter, something sparks between them. They have what they think is a night of passion and lust. Isa is now aware of the magnitude of Grady's PTSD. She wants to help him but Grady can't bring himself to believe that she is genuine. Besides, to be able to help him, Isa has to help herself first. When she finds that she has been cheated of her hard earned college fund by the least likely suspect, she makes a deal with Grady. Spending time together brings them closer but the demons are always lurking in the background.

As the story unfolds, more and more are revealed about their pasts and the reasons for the way they feel. There is frustration, despair, hopelessness, loss of self esteem, guilt and love. It brings home the reality of post war results. It's very well portrayed and I couldn't help but feel for both Grady and Isa. I would recommend to adult readers due to the graphic sex episodes.

I received an advanced ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
