Some vampires have trouble figuring out how they want to spend eternity, but playboy Michael Odell isn't one of them. He knows exactly what he wants: fine wines and beautiful women fuel his passion and he's made it his mission to sample as many of either as he can. Fate has other ideas. One night, on his way home, Michael discovers a woman lying face-down in an alley, who is losing the fight to live. There's only one way of saving her: The Ritual. Little does Michael know that this little act of mercy is going to change his life forever and before long he finds himself falling for the curvy stranger.

Anna doesn't remember how she ended up discarded at death's door in a dark alley, only that she woke up there. She doesn't even know her last name. After coming face-to-face with her gorgeous rescuer, she passes out again and finds herself in a lavish mansion with a new lease on eternal life.

Who - or more importantly, what - is she now? And the people who tried to kill her - why were they after her? Anna is determined to figure it all out for herself. But before her questions are answered, she has to learn that even in this new immortal existence, it's good to have friends - and perhaps a lover - by your side.

Michael buttoned up his woolen overcoat as he stepped outside. It was a starless night; the dense cloud cover had made sure of that. There was a certain electricity in the air, which to him suggested it might be about to start snowing.

Michael took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Yes, something was definitely coming. Could that be what had made him feel off for most of the night?

The frosty air surrounding the bar he'd just left seemed heavy with a great many aromas. Things that humans might never notice; for example, the scent of what remained of the fallen autumn leaves from that one tree down the street.

Michael turned to face the opposite direction. Chinatown was at least a mile away, but he could smell the restaurants from here.

He was tempted to stretch his legs a little and sprint home as fast as only a vampire could, but the roads were still too busy. He couldn't risk someone watching him as he seemingly disappeared into thin air. The Council didn't take kindly to vampires exposing themselves to humans at the best of times. Ever since the big showdown between Michael's friend and mentor Alexander and Council leader Julius, they'd been under extra scrutiny. Julius would jump at the chance to punish Michael for supporting Alexander.

Things had really changed a lot in a short period of time, and not entirely for the better.

Michael opened his eyes again, resigned to the fact that he would either have to hail a cab or walk home at an excruciatingly slow, much more human-like pace.
He started to walk roughly in the direction of Hyde Park. If he found a quiet spot, he might still indulge himself in a little fun. As he crossed the busy street ahead, his nose caught a whiff of something unexpected, something metallic.

His instincts took over. He turned on his heel and sped up a little as he followed the smell. A low whimper urged him to speed up even further, but he couldn't risk going any faster if he didn't want to make a spectacle of himself.

There was a dark passageway in between two large office buildings. He made his way through and found himself in a quiet courtyard, which housed a number of large garbage bins. A woman's foot peeked out from in between them. No human would have been able to see it in the dark, but Michael could.

Her breaths were labored and becoming shallower, and her heartbeat was slowing. Michael pushed one of the bins aside and kneeled beside the woman, who lay face-down on the ground.

It was obvious to him now; she was barely clinging on to life. He carefully turned her onto her back. Her lips had a purple tinge and her skin looked dry and unusually pale for a human.

The two dark marks on her neck spoke volumes.

She'd been drained.

For but a split second, her eyelids fluttered open. She seemed to see him and opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came. Then she slipped back into unconsciousness.

Michael tensed up. He ought to leave, pretend he never found her. The last thing he needed was for someone to find him here, standing over a dying woman who had clearly been attacked by one of his own. But he couldn't bring himself to leave.

How pretty she was, how fragile, as she clung to her last shred of humanity.

Why had she ended up like this? Killing was against the rules. And discarding a drained body out in public where it could so easily be discovered? That was sacrilege.
His mind raced. Too many questions, not enough answers.

Michael gazed down at her face; the slightly parted lips, despite their unnatural color, still looked full and luxurious. As did the rest of her, actually. She made a beautiful corpse. Such a waste. This woman would have been a sight to behold before someone had decided to take her life for themselves.

He ran the back of his index finger along the side of her face. She twitched slightly, seemingly in reaction to his touch, causing him to pull away again.

No, he would not leave her, discarded among these bins of office refuse. This wasn't the end she deserved.

Michael closed his eyes and tried to focus. Her heartbeat had become irregular, as though her body was giving up the fight. If he didn't hurry, there wouldn't be any life left to save.

Before he fully realized what he was doing, Michael nicked a vein in his wrist and pressed the newly created wound against her lips.

"Drink," he whispered.

She was too far out of it, so he couldn't compel her to listen, but that wouldnt stop him.

Then, he picked up one of her arms and brought it to his own lips. He waited for what felt like forever. Was she too far gone already?

"Drink or you'll die!" he urged again, fully aware she likely couldn't even hear him.

Still, as more and more of his blood trickled out of the gash in his wrist, there was a subtle change in her. Her heartbeat seemed to strengthen. Her breaths became more controlled.

And then, out of nowhere, her free hand jerked up to grab his wrist and press it tightly against her mouth. Finally, she drank in deep gulps as her body tried to recover what it had lost.

That was his cue.

He bit into the wrist he'd been holding already and allowed himself the smallest of tastes. That completed the cycle. The Ritual was done.

She became still again and let go of his arm, her hand flopping down onto her stomach. Her eyes had remained shut throughout; she probably hadn't even realized what had just happened.

He'd barely realized it too; he'd been acting purely on instinct. Now, as he stood up and inspected the smeared blood on his wrist, it hit him. He'd performed the Ritual.

He'd created another vampire, tried to, anyway.

That was something he'd vowed he'd never take as lightly as his own maker had.

She wasn't out of the woods yet; in fact, he wouldn't know if she'd even survive the change until the following night, but for some strange reason, he'd jumped in and impulsively made the biggest decision of his immortal life so far.

Things would never be the same again.

Buried Secrets by JC Valentine - Blog Tour

Buried Secrets

How do you live with yourself when you don't even know who you are?

On a chill October night, a girl goes missing setting the small town of Oakridge on edge. James has spent the last five years running from a past that still haunts him to this day. Now he finds himself thrust back into a life he thought he left behind. Finding out his new home may be haunted and reconnecting with an old friend while being thrust into a murder mystery, James finds himself trying to figure out which end is up while questioning his own sanity.

**AUTHORS NOTE** Buried Secrets is a New Adult, mystery thriller with very little romance but heavy on the suspense.

5 Stars

I have read most of this author's work which are mainly romance novels. This mystery suspense psychogical thriller is very different but it's quite a ride. Beautifully executed!

James is a scrawny thirteen year old who keeps to himself. He doesn't have any friends until he meets AJ in the woods where he always finds solace. They become good friends until James moves away from the small town of Oakridge, round about the time of the disappearance of a young girl. Something that haunts him!

James is now back in Oakridge, his parents' decision. He soon reconnects with AJ but James is no longer the same kid who left five years ago. Although he still values his solitude, he is more open to having friends. He even socialises occasionally and finds a girlfriend in Jen.

Another girl goes missing and being the new kid in town, he is instantly bound to be a suspect. It doesn't stop here as there are more disappearances. James finds himself caught in a dilemma. He thinks that he knows who the culprit might be but what if he is wrong!

What appears to be fairly obvious for most parts of this story is quite misleading and then the penny drops. When the past starts to resurface, everything starts to fall into place and here comes the big surprise! Whoa! Some revelation!

This story is nail biting! It's so well written that it's impossible to anticipate what really triggered the mystery surrounding this small town. It's a fantastic thriller with all the right ingredients and more!

I was glued to this book from the time I picked it up right to the end! Fully recommended to those who like to get stuck in a good psychological mystery thriller. There is a hint of the supernatural or is there? Worth finding out!

I received a complimentary eARC from IndieSage PR. The views expressed are my personal and honest opinion.

Blackness surrounded him, its endless pools of ink swallowing him whole. He couldn't see his hand in front of his face, but he felt the terror seeping through his skin, past his bones and making its way down to his very soul.

James knew he was in the throes of one of his nightmares again. He could never make out a thing, just knew the feeling it left him with.

He tried to make himself wake up, but couldn't find his way out. The feeling that someone was coming for him caused panic to swell and his heart to accelerate, threatening to break free from his chest.

Not knowing what was coming, fear lacerating his insides, James started to run blindly. In his bed, his feet kicked out wildly, tangling in the linens and ratcheting up his terror, because to James, he was trapped.

His breathing labored and coming in short, sharp bursts, James cried out at the same time his body bolted upright in the bed. Sweat beaded on his brow and dampened his skin, his clothes suctioned to his body uncomfortably. He was clammy and winded, shaken, but he already felt better for knowing he was free from that awful feeling of suffocating terror that had threatened to overtake him just moments ago.

Scrubbing his hands down his face, James breathed deeply, hanging his head to his chest while his body calmed. As his adrenalin levels normalized, and he began to feel more like himself, James gave a final sigh of relief. Stabbing his fingers through his hair, he was readying himself to try to go back to sleep when he looked up and choked on his breath.

His entire body went rigid in an instant. His breathing, his heartbeat. Everything ceased to work. In the next instant James threw himself back against his headboard, fear gripping him once again.

He couldn't believe what he was seeing. He would chance rubbing his eyes to be sure his vision was true, only he was too frightened of what he would find once he opened them again.

Compromising Positions by Jenna Bayley-Burke - Blog Tour

Compromising Positions

by Jenna Bayley-Burke
Publication Date: November 28, 2016
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Select, Contemporary Romance

Falling in love is the last thing on his busy agenda but compromising positions can lead just about anywhere. When fitness empire CEO David Strong agrees to help teach a yoga class for couples based on poses in The Kama Sutra, he's put in one compromising position after another. Especially since the instructor is his best friend's little sister-in-law, doesn't have a lot of experience with men, and is totally off-limits. She's everything David's never wanted. So he can't understand why he suddenly needs her so much.

Sophie DelFino has fantasized about David for over a decade, but he has a type, and she's far from it. He's also got all sorts of rules and reasons why they shouldn't be together. Good thing Sophie is all about bending the rules.

David tried to remember the last time he'd been to a grocery store. College maybe? If there was anything at all in his fridge, his sister had put it there. Kelly was wonderful about leaving ice cream and chips in her wake.

"If we split the list, it will go faster." Sophie smiled up at him.

"Okay." He shrugged, taking the torn piece of notebook paper from her hand. He scanned the items. All produce.

"What's on your list?" he asked, taking it from her hand. More produce. He knew it. Women ate weird. His sister was the only sane woman in the entire world.

The joy of having a nutritionist for a brother-in-law. "Craig's using me to test his latest diet plan," she explained.

He took a step back and looked at her again. Even in sweats, she looked fit. "Why?" She waved her hand.

"Who can keep track of Craig's reasons? I indulge him. To a point."

"You should do his Deliver-Ease. It actually has real food, not just vegetables." And since the plan was run through Strong Gyms, utilizing it let him do a little quality control.

She raised a dark eyebrow. "You're on his diet plan?"

"You're not the only one who indulges Craig. Besides, it's easy. Comes right to the office. I don't even have to think about it."

She looked at him in disbelief. "But why are you on a diet?"

"I'm not." He pushed the cart forward, away from the lettuce. "Craig decided twenty years ago that he knew better than I did what I should be eating. It's a habit from way back."  He didn't want to get into his bodybuilding days. It had been an obsession for him for a while, something he and Craig had done together. But it was not an arena he had ever excelled in. He'd just gotten by. He wasn't comfortable being average.

Sophie began to study the different lettuces so David attacked his list. "How did one pick out a cantaloupe?" He looked at the melons piled atop one another. Should he grab the one on top or did you study the specimens the way she was now sizing up the citrus? He picked up two, weighing each in his hands. How could a person possibly know which one to buy? He moved his hands together, eying the fruit, trying to squeeze them to find some difference. They looked exactly the same. She was suddenly in front of him, taking away the cantaloupes and replacing them with grapefruits. "This is much more realistic, David, unless youre into fakes." It took him a minute to realize her insinuation. "I was not, not"  he stammered Feeling up the fruit? "Sure you were." It's okay, your secrets are safe with me. Her smile told him she was teasing as she turned the cart toward the apples.

He stomped after her. "I thought you weren't into apples."  He smiled as she blushed, obviously recalling her earlier lecture.

"Apples can be good. As long as they are part of a whole bowl of fruit and not the only thing in the dish." She gave him a cocky grin.

He laughed, full and deep. This girl was a piece of work. "You handle the fruit, since you are the expert. I'll stick with the vegetables." ! He couldn't help himself, as he brushed past her, he leaned in and whispered, "Just how big do you like your cucumbers?"

By day, Jenna is faster than a speeding toddler, stronger than a stubborn husband, able to leap tall Lego structures in a single bound, but by night, while the family sleeps she writes romance novels where no one ever has to scoop up after the dog, change diapers, clip coupons, drive carpool, do laundry, mop floors, get silly putty out of hair, vacuum, empty the vacuum bag (gross!), exercise, count calories, apply bandaids, clean up puke, wait where was this going? Oh, Jenna writes romance because it is glamorous. Just ask the dog.

A chance meeting, and Victor and Helena’s chemistry is undeniable. Except, her presence clutters his focus. Victor shouldn’t crave their nights, shouldn’t be concerned where she is or with whom. And meanwhile in Germany, Kyria Castle deteriorates at a suspicious speed, indebting Helena further to the man she left behind.

Victor and Helena believe in duty. They embrace sacrifice. But when love strikes, it strikes hard, and sometimes you have to choose where your heart is truly at home.

My cheeks warm with embarrassment at the people waiting behind me. A female employee helps me unclasp the diamond bracelet and matching necklace. The crown though is impossible to get out of my princess ’do.

“Can I wear it through the security portal?” I ask, broken shoes in one hand.

“No, I’m sorry. It will buzz,” the security person explains.
“The portal is created to alert us to most metals besides gold and silver.”

I can’t tell him I wear gold. Real, irreplaceable, century-old heirlooms. He wouldn’t believe me anyway. “If it’s okay with you, I’d like to try.”

He lifts his arms in subtle agreement, a have-it-your-way, and I enter the booth, walk out without incident.

Employees from two checkpoints stare at me while I pick my stuff off the band. I shake my head, slowly at first, but then I have nothing to say, no witty comeback, and my flight instinct kicks in. I get up on my toes so I don’t stumble in the too-long skirt and stride as slowly as I can into the transit hall.

I need to not stress the hell out. Just, I wish someone was with me to talk me down. I could call Elfriede. I don’t have my phone. I need a new phone. God, how pathetic am I?

Once I’m sure security isn’t following, I haul butt down the corridor. Tiles are cold under bare feet, it turns out. I’d step into my shoes again, but one of them is broken. Would people stare less if I limped and my heels creak-clacked against the floor?

A high-end fashion store beams in the distance. “We’ll help you blend in. Hurry, hurry,” it calls. I run. Benches are in the way. I’m getting clumsy. I’m panicking.
Suddenly, a potted palm tree appears out of nowhere, half-blocking my view of the Promised Land, and my torso doubles around it as I slam to the ground.

I let out an ungraceful oomph. And realize I’m not on the ground after all. No, there’s an arm around me, and miraculously I’m on my feet, wobbly but sort of erect.

“You all right?” an American accent asks.

“I was going to Cloe’s over there,” I explain in German, pointing feebly and not feeling as regal as I’ve been taught. Dark eyebrows contract from within a tanned face above me.

“Sorry?” His arm is still strong around me, really freaking strong, and somehow I’ve got a death grip around it while trying to pry him off.

I translate the same stupid sentence to English. “I was going to Cloe’s. It’s over there.”

His brows are perfectly thick or thin and their arcs are so perfectly perfect they look like they’ve been combed, but then the furrow between them smoothens and I discover his eyes.

In a Ranger's Arms by Donna Michaels - Blog Tour

In a Rangers Arms

by Donna Michaels
The Men of At Ease Ranch, #1
Publication Date: November 28, 2016
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Lovestruck, Contemporary Romance

Former Army Ranger Stone Mitchum doesn't have time for sex. Since starting a company with his brother and two buddies, he's had more important things on his mind. Like transitioning veterans back into society. But when his curvy new tenant falls into his arms, literally, his libido snaps to attention. Jovy Larson has four weeks to prove she's worthy of taking over the family business. Her challenge? Sell gluten-free, vegan food, in the middle of cattle country, Texas. It's a tough task, but not half as tough as fighting her attraction to her sexy, surly landlord.

Before she knows it, Jovy's tangling sheets with the hot cowboy, stalked by a jealous cow, and strategizing ways to help Stone's ranch. But by the time her lease runs out and the test is over, she's faced with a new challenge, competing against Stone's sense of duty to win his heart.

 5 Stars

The veterans don't always have a fair deal once they have done their duties. Getting back into civilian life is quite daunting and the lack of support only adds to the problem. The author highlights these difficulties and has come up with a great concept. Veterans looking out for each other!

Stone is an ex Army Ranger and has bought his grandfather's farm in partnership with his brother Brick, and two other ex servicemen. His aim is to provide them with a roof and other life necessities. Nothing else matters. He has zero interest in women after last year's incident involving one of his friends.

Jovy is in competition with her cousin to take over the family business when her grandfather retires. Her task is to open up a vegan shop and make a profit within a month. In Texas! It's not going to be easy in a meat eating environment but she is up for the challenge. She made a promise and intends to keep it!

Stone is Jovy's landlord. Having made all the transactions on line, they haven't met but have already formed an opinion about each other, mainly through a misunderstanding. They are both taken by each other on their first encounter and then Jovy opens her mouth and puts her foot in it! She calls her landlord a jackass without knowing who she is talking to. Oops!

Once they have cleared up the misunderstanding, they find that they quite like each other's company. The strong connection between them becomes harder to ignore and they give in, fully aware that Jovy's stay is temporary. When there is a crisis, Jovy wholeheartedly steps in to help out, risking everything that she has worked for. Then something else goes wrong and the prospect of any future looks unattainable. Can they resolve their issues and come up with a solution?

Although, this is a serious topic the author brings quite a bit of humour in the story. The interactions between Stone and his brother can be hilarious. Jovy and Stone are passionate about each other. There are some heartbreaking moments when everything looks hopeless. Stone's sense of duty to his cause is commendable. Lula Belle definitely brought a smile to my face. There isn't anything that I didn't like about this novel. Definitely worth reading.

Dream Angel (#1 Angel) by Jane West

Author                       Jane West
Publication Date     4 October 2016
Genre                         New Adult Paranormal Romance

After the death of Stevie’s father, life becomes hard growing up. Stevie’s mother, Sara, an alcoholic, and diagnosed with bipolar disorder, has forced Stevie to live a life of uncertainty, bouncing from town to town, living in cheap hotels and barely scraping by.

On the eve of Stevie’s eighteenth birthday, Sara announces that they are moving once again. This time, the place of destination is a small town in the Deep South of Louisiana.

On the first day of the new school, the alluring Aidan Bane swaggers into Stevie’s English class and from that point on, Stevie’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn.

Thrust into a magickal world of extraordinaire, Stevie begins to unveil her true inheritance and that nothing is what it seems. And as tension builds, Stevie becomes suspicious of the charming Aidan Bane that he may be the mastermind behind the strange and eerie events encircling her.

When Stevie comes to live at Aidan’s castle, she stumbles upon a private conversation. As her mistrust becomes real, Stevie discovers that Aidan has been keeping dark secrets that he is a member of the occult, known as the Illuminati, and he and his vile uncle are conspiring to take her life.

With the stakes high and surrounded by evil forces threatening her life, Stevie must make a life altering decision that might cost her her life. No one can be trusted, but despite the risk, Stevie turns to Aidan for help.

Can Aidan be trusted or is he truly the prince of darkness?

Darkly romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Drea
m Angel captures the struggle between defying our hearts and quenching our desires.

The first part of the Angel Trilogy takes place in a small town where gossips spread like wild fire. There is an interesting mix of the occult and science.

Stephanie who goes by the name of Stevie lives with her mother and they never stay in one place for long. Stevie's friends have organised her eighteenth birthday party, only she won't be there because her mother has decided that they have to move on that day. She doesn't have a choice. Another town and another new school.

Aidan is the mysterious, rich and popular bad boy. He wears designer clothes and drives a flashy car! It just so happens that he starts at the new school on the same day as Stevie. He strikes a conversation with her but she is not impressed. Why would a rich kid be interested in her? She leads a poor life. She starts her day with a job before going to school to help her mother pay the bills and any food is a luxury.

Stevie is befriended by Sally who introduces her to her little click but one of her friends is not very keen and takes an instant dislike to Stevie. She seems to know more about Stevie than she should and her insults spark a near "cat fight". Luckily, Aidan intervenes and then something strange happens. From then on he seems to be there whenever she is in trouble and he doesn't take no for an answer when she declines his help.

As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that some of the strange occurrences are way out of the ordinary. Stevie is a sceptic and doesn't believe in the paranormal, even when her new friend Ms Noel holds a seance and gives her information about her father. Something that she is very sensitive about. Sara, her mother is never very forthcoming with information and she is far from being a model mother. Her behaviour is appaling and the more is revealed about her, the worse it gets. She always puts herself first and doesn't care that she has led Stevie is a dangerous situation. There is something that others want from Stevie and would go as far as killing her to get what they want. Besides Ms Noel, the only other person who appears to have her interest at heart is Aidan or does he?

Aidan is a contradiction in term. His moods swing from one extreme to the other. He is one of those characters who brings out the love hate relationship in the reader. Stevie tries to be independent but she is very naive and impulsive, getting herself into more and more trouble. She stomps her foot once too often but she has a good heart! Her relationship with Aidan is unpredictable. He is unpredictable!

This story revolves around the occult and as soon as a mystery is solved, another one rears its ugly head. Most of the characters are not who they appear to be. The revelations about some of them are quite shocking. It's an intriguing storyline which kept me guessing. I found it a little long winded in places but then again it could be just me. Otherwise, it's a captivating read. It ends on the most disturbing  and unexpected cliffhanger. What happens next is anyone's guess! I would recommend to those who like the paranormal with a mix of the occult, science, romance, mystery, suspense, dark and evil magic .

I received a complimentary ecopy from the author. The views expressed are my personal and honest opinion.
