Diadem of Death (#2 Nefertari Hughes Mystery) - BR Myers

Author                        BR Myers
Publication Date       25 April 2017
Genre                          Young Adult Mythology
                                      Mystery  Romance

Nefertari “Terry” Hughes is looking forward to spending the school break with her boyfriend, but when her archaeologist father announces he’s working on a project that will take him to Egypt, all hopes of having a romantic summer are buried.

Terry accompanies her father to Alexandria where she’s reunited with her first crush, Awad—all grown up and an expert in translating hieroglyphics. He confides that the team is in a race to find Cleopatra’s lost tomb before a secret band of rebels steals Egypt’s last Pharaoh and her diadem.

But sabotage and a deadly accident put everyone on high alert, and Terry isn’t sure whom to trust. As the line between ally and enemy begins to blur, Terry has to keep her wits about her and figure out who wants the diadem badly enough to kill.

Diadem of Death continues with the quest of finding and accessing Cleopatra's resting place. It's back in Egypt to decipher the hieroglyphics uncovered in the sarcophagus from the previous excavation.

Nefertari aka Terry was chosen to guard Cleopatra's asp and with this comes power. She is now a "superhero" who acts as a vigilante.

Having travelled for most of her life, she has finally found a home in the small town of Devonshire. Zach is her steady boyfriend and Maude and Fraser have become her best friends. She is happy and settling well in her new life.

Her father, the curator of the museum has uncovered some glyphs which might well lead to what his family has been been trying to achieve. They receive an invitation from Prince Kamal to go to the excavation site in Egypt for further exploration.

Terry, Fraser and Maude accompany them and they come across their first challenge at the airport. Upon arrival in Egypt they have to work with Dr Elnadi and his daughter Meera. Terry is reunited with Awad, her first crush. They rekindle their friendship but it would appear that Awad wants more but Terry is not so sure!

The chain of events during the excavation proves to be dangerous. The guides are scared off by the fear of a curse as some of them become sick. Terry becomes ill too and her powers that she has kept a secret from the Egyptian crew start to wane. Some of the artifacts disappear and the site itself is being compromised. Nothing is as it seems! It would appear that there is a traitor amongst the midst and knowing who to trust becomes even harder. The Illuminati is a secret organisation and its real objective is quite obscure. Anyone on the site could be a member! Cleopatra's diadem is the key to the burial place and it's also the root of all the problems.

Initially, I found Terry to be careless with her powers but as time goes on, she becomes wiser. Maude and Fraser remain loyal and supportive. Terry's father is overprotective even when he wants to complete this difficult task. Awad is very knowledgeable and valued by the doctor. Whilst everyone seems to be above board, anyone of them could be the traitor.

This second instalment is even more complex than the first one. Danger is everywhere. Lives are threatened. False accusations are made. Tough decisions have to be taken. It's full of mystery, suspense and humour too. There is supernatural magic. The twist at the end is quite a revelation. Especially the reasons behind the actions. I like the conclusion but would like to see more of Terry and her friends. What's in store for her in the future? It's an exciting adventure which I would recommend to other readers.

I was kindly issued with a complimentary eARC from the publisher via NetGalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

The Lords of Miami: To Catch Her, an all-new contemporary romance by Alice K. Wayne is now available!!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00014]

Book one of the Brothers Ramírez

Tomás Ramírez was the youngest son of his organized crime family, and the only smear they carried on their perfect lineage. He was brazen, defiant, and shamelessly sexual, with a sadistic streak that left me lying awake at night wondering what he would do to me, or my body, next. He was the type of man that made me hate him while I clung to him.

Oh… and did I mention he’s blackmailing me?

Mikayla Jones was a sweet, quirky girl, with a dirty past, trying to make her way alone in the world. She was doing just fine in her warm bed of lies, until I came along and burned it all to hell, making her face the truth and confront her demons.

“Why?” you might ask… because I’m in love with the silly little girl, and I won’t stop until she’s mine.

🌟🌟🌟🌟

To Catch Her is a good introduction the Ramirez, an organised crime family. It's quite different to the mafia novels that I have read but just as compelling.

Tomás is the youngest of the three Ramirez brothers. Santiago is the oldest and the most responsible. Mateo is in the middle, quite laid back and popular with the ladies. Tomás is considered to be the least responsible. He was the rebel teenager and still a troublemaker in some ways.

Mikayla comes from a very poor background. Since losing her father, she has been fending for herself with her mother being in a permanent haze of drunkenness. She puts herself through college by camming to pay her fees. She is now a successful journalist who doesn’t tolerate criminals.

Tomás manages his family advertising company and when he advertises a job vacancy for an assistant, Mikayla doesn't hesitate to apply. She sees this as the ideal opportunity to look into the criminal activities with the prospect of exposing the organisation. Tomás plays along with her and little does she know that he has a card up his sleeves. One that he intends to use shamelessly! Mikayla now finds herself at a disadvantage but has no choice at this stage.

She is soon tangled up in the things that she despises the most. When there is a turn of events concerning her best friend Quentin, she finds herself questioning her principles. The law is not always what it appears to be. She has this love hate relationship with Tomás but the chemistry between them is off the charts. They have some really hot sexual interludes and other feelings start to creep in. The thing is that Tomás is keeping a secret from Mikayla. A secret which could change everything.

The story revolves mainly revolves around Tomás and Mikayla but there are some very good insights into the characters of the other brothers and the family dynamics. A very close knitted family who looks after its own. They are all different but delightful. I absolutely loved the interactions between Tomás and Mykayla. Seeing them together is frustrating and good fun at the same time.

It's a romantic novel with high family values but be warned, there are some upsetting aspects. It's an addictive storyline which ends on a cliffhanger and I would love to see what happens next.

Worth of Waste (#2 DeLuca Duet) Bethany-Kris

Author                        Bethany-Kris
Publication Date      6 February 2017
Genre                         Adult Contemporary
                                    Mystery Romance

DeLuca Duet, Part Two

The Chicago Mob is the same as it has always been—violent, greedy, and excessive. The Outfit families have turned their backs when they were needed the most one too many times, but Dino DeLuca didn’t expect anything different.

His whole life has been lived for the Outfit—for his family.

He has a whole new set of reasons to live and fight now.

Karen Martin makes Dino change all the rules.

He’s finally ready to show everyone just how much waste is truly worth in the mafia, and just how far one will go for freedom from it all.

He’s learned these lessons well.

Too well.

Author’s Note: The DeLuca Duet is a standalone duet with a HEA ending that can be read independently.

After the way things turned out in Damian's and Lily's story, I didn't think that there would be such an outstanding story about Dino. A pleasant surprise and a beautiful conclusion.

Dino can't do much about the situation that he is in right now, but that's not to say that he can't make plans for the future. He has enough time on his hands.

He has only seen uncle Ben once in eighteen months but now it's business as usual. The difference is that he has a reason to live. A reason to get away from the life that was forced upon him. First he has to make sure that his siblings can have the lives that they deserve.

Karen remains her understanding self and has blossomed with the changes in her life. Her relationship with Dino has strengthened despite the difficulties and uncertainties of their future. Dino is prepared to do anything to break free from the life of misery and cruelty to have a proper family life. Will his plans come to fruition?

This final episode of the DeLuca story is well thought through. It gives a different perspective about being in the mob and the meaning of true family values, despite all the violence. Where there is a will, there is a way and Dino has what it takes!

I have enjoyed this duet as much as I did the rest of the series and will be looking out for more of this author's work.

ASP of ascension - BR Myers

Author                        BR Myers
Publication Date      21 July 2015
Genre                         Young Adult Mythology
                                    Mystery Romance

Nefertari “Terry” Hughes has three rules for surviving high school:

#1 Don’t attract attention.
#2 Don’t get involved.
#3 Don’t make trouble.

A year after the accident that left her crippled and took her mother’s life, sixteen-year-old Terry just wants to keep her head down and survive her new high school. When she catches the eye of cute basketball star Zach — who happens to be the boyfriend of mean girl Allison — all hopes of flying under the radar are gone.

She is thrust even further in the spotlight when Fraser, the editor of the school newspaper, learns Mr. Hughes is the renowned archaeologist overseeing the new Egyptian display at the museum, which is rumoured to include Cleopatra’s sarcophagus. Fraser’s research leads to the fifty-year-old mystery of a girl who vanished while on a school trip to to the museum along with an artifact that may be Cleopatra’s asp.

When Mr. Hughes falls into a coma and his co-worker claims it’s the curse of Cleopatra, the stakes become too high for Terry to ignore. Terry must work with Fraser and her new candy loving friend Maude to find out what happened fifty years ago in hopes of saving her father before time runs out.

Rated T - Teen 13 and up: May contain violence, crude humour, suggestive themes and/or strong language.

ASP of ascension is a fascinating rendition of Cleopatra and the curse associated with her asp. It focuses on the trials and tribulations of students' lives in High School.

Nefertari who prefers to be called Terry is a sixteen year old trying to adjust to her new school. She has spent most of her life travelling with her archaeologist parents until the fatal accident where she lost her mother and she herself sustained severe injuries.

After the discovery of their last excavation, Terry's father has been invited to organise an exhibition in a small town. The results of her injuries have left her with lack of confidence and she is trying hard to stay "invisible". Her father being a famous archaeologist makes it even harder as her history classes just happens to have Cleopatra as the next project.

She teams up with Maude, a colourful character and Zach the basketball star. They are both impressed at her knowledge of the subject and Zach finds himself drawn to her. The problem? His girlfriend, Allison is the nasty queen bee and a bully. When she focuses on a target, she comes up with the worse possible methods of humiliation!

Fraser, the school journalist approaches her for a scoop on the rumoured Cleopatra's discovery and here begins the most unexpected investigations. They are faced with an unsolved fifty years old case of a student's disappearance. The more they delve in, the more mysteries are uncovered. Terry is tasked to find the asp which is not a priority until her father goes into an inexplicable coma. She is led to believe that finding the asp is the answer to his recovery. It's a dangerous task.

Fraser and Maude get involved in her quest and what they uncover can't be ignored. Somehow what happened fifty years ago could be linked to the present situation. This leads to a beautiful friendship between the three of them. Zach doesn't hide his attraction for Terry and when she discovers that he too, faces his own struggles, she is more than supportive.

The plot is very well orchestrated. It's very difficult to know who are friends or enemies. It's amazing at how far some would go for the greed of power. The bullies take extreme delight in demeaning their victims. The unravelling of the mysteries is intriguing and fascinating. The characters are plausible. Overall, it's a well paced and compelling mythological and historical story with a supernatural twist, romance, rivalry, jealousy, cruelty and danger. This young adult novel would appeal to readers of all ages.

I was kindly issued with an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

Angels' Judgement - Nalini Singh

Author                       Nalini Singh
Publication Date     6 December 2012
Genre                         Paranormal Thriller Romance

Warrior angels, vampire hunters, and angels gone bad heat up this altogether sizzling paranormal alternate universe, from the bestselling author Nalini Singh.

Angels' Judgement is the compelling story of passion, love and danger in the Guild Hunter world. Sara and Deacon are Guild Hunters, their life's work is catching and capturing - or killing - rogue angels. It's dangerous work and sometimes life or death decisions must be made in a moment. And when a judgement has to be made, should love be allowed to get in the way . . . ?

Guild Hunter is one of my favourite series and I although familiar with Sara and Deacon, I didn't know quite how they met. This novella answers my questions.

Sara is one of the best hunters and now that the director is going in retirement, she has the opportunity to replace him. She is very popular with her colleagues who all think that she is ideal for the job.

Whilst on a hunt for a runaway vampire, she meets Deacon who appeares to know all about her. He helps her out with this mission but he is there for another reason. When he introduces himself to Sara, she is surprised as she had always thought that he was a myth! There is a good reason for him being who he is.

Deacon then reveals that she is to help him with another mission. Not a pleasant one as it could involve one of her own. They are both attracted to each other and give in to their desires, knowing that they can't be involved if Sara is to become the new director. Besides, he is a loner and being in the limelight is a definite no no.

They go through with their investigations, facing various dangerous situations along the way. Neither of them wants to part when the mission is over. Can they find a way to pursue a relationship?

This is a short, compact and comprehensive read. I like the concept. It's a beautiful love story with danger, action and suspense. I am glad that I picked this up as I am now aware of Sara's and Deacon's back story. A whirlwind romance.

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.
