Fledgling nurse Sorcha Alden knew she had the skills to save lives, but she never dreamed that her own life would be the one in danger.

Driven by tragedy to honor her family name, Sorcha embarks on a journey that takes her from the bleak but familiar streets of New York, through the sultry and seductive city of New Orleans, and into the brutal jungles of Nepal. Forging friendships and carrying on her mother’s mission of healing was her dream.

Plunging into a love affair with the mysterious Dr. Ashayle could have been a fairytale.

Being murdered and waking up as a blood-thirsty monster—became her living nightmare.

Torn away form a life that had just begun, Sorcha returns to New Orleans as a newborn vampire, forced to start over in a cutthroat underworld of devilry and decadence. Complicated politics, bitter rivals and jealous ancestors stand between her and the promises she’s still determined to keep.

In a realm where the boundary between good and evil is as murky as the Mississippi River and immortal does not mean invincible, will Sorcha ever risk her shattered heart and love again? Can the magical harmony of the Crescent City give her enough courage to fulfill her eternal destiny?

Monsters & Angels is a journey into the supernatural world during the 1930s. From New York to New Orleans and Nepal. It introduces the Rakshasa, a rare breed of vampires.

Sorcha has just qualified as a nurse when she suffers a family loss. Left to grieve on her own, she becomes restless and when she sees an advert about recruitment of nurses in New Orleans, she takes a chance.

She embarks on the long sea journey to New Orleans to work in the hospital run by nuns. Raimond, a secretive and enigmatic doctor is the hospital director. She goes all googly eyes over him and looks for every opportunity to work with him. He is not indifferent to her, but keeps his distance. He organises a trip for the new recruits to go and work in a hospital in Nepal for a period of time.

Vyr is one of the young doctors in Nepal and Sorcha is instantly attracted to him! They become involved and not long after, she is attacked, leaving her with mortal injuries. Luckily, Raimond finds her and being the kind and compassionate being, he reveals his true nature and saves her. He becomes her protector and takes her back to New Orleans to begin a new life. He is hopeful that something more will come out of their relationship, but nothing is ever straightforward. Vyr decides to come and work in New Orleans and everything changes.

I had some issues with some of the content. I found Sorcha to be selfish and inconsiderate. First of all, she takes off from New York without even leaving a note for those who care about her. She jumps into Rayna's bed whilst involved with Vyr and giving Raimond false hope. She knows that she is being hurtful, but carries on with her deceit regardlessly! The fashion doesn't reflect the era. The continuity of the story is interrupted in various places. The brothers keep popping up! There are no explanations about the source of Sorcha's visions.

It's an interesting concept which introduces various magical and supernatural beings. There is rivalry amongst the different vampire families and a war is brewing. Witches use dark magic to create havoc. Anything can be expected in New Orleans! Part of the conclusion is upsetting, but fitting! The end gives the indication that there might be a sequel as there are unanswered questions. Despite some of my apprehensions, I enjoyed the storyline, specifically towards the end. I would recommend to lovers of the paranormal.

I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.
