Shadow of the Swan (#3 The Novels of Ravenwood) Judith Sterling - Book Blitz

Shadow of the Swan
Judith Sterling
(The Novels of Ravenwood #3)
Publication date: January 31st 2018
Genres: Historical, Romance

Lady Constance de Bret was determined to be a nun, until shadows from the past eclipsed her present. Marriage is the safest option, but she insists on a spiritual union, in which physical intimacy is forbidden.

Not so easy with a bridegroom who wields unparalleled charm! But a long-buried secret could taint his affection and cloak her in shadow forever.

Back from the Crusades, Sir Robert le Donjon craves a home of his own and children to inherit it. From the moment he meets Constance, he feels a mysterious bond between them. When she’s threatened, he vows to protect her and agrees to the spiritual marriage, with the hope of one day persuading her to enjoy a “real” one. She captivates him but opens old wounds and challenges everything he thought he believed.

Two souls in need of healing. Two hearts destined to beat as one.

Robert turned to Constance but said nothing.

After a moment, she met his gaze. “Why do you stare at me?”

He grinned. “On the morrow, I want to show you something.”

“You’ll see.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Why won’t you tell me?”

“’Tis a surprise.”

“I don’t like surprises.”

“Neither do I, on the whole. But you’ll like this one.” He reached toward his belt.

She stepped back. “What are you doing?”

“Undressing.” He set his belt on the table.

Her stomach dropped. “Why?”

“Aren’t you the suspicious one?” He pulled off his boots. “’Tis customary to doff one’s clothes at bedtime.”

She whirled around, turning her back on him. “I slept fully clothed at the nunnery.”

She stared hard at the stone wall.

“I hate to state the obvious, but this isn’t a nunnery.”

“Well, how do you sleep?”

“Naked, of course.”

Heat flooded her cheeks and forehead. “Is that necessary?”

“I could wear my breeches.”

She sighed. Whew!

“On one condition.” His tone was loaded with meaning beyond her grasp.

What condition? What does he want from me?

She turned to face him. Apart from his calf-length breeches, he was nude. Her gaze locked onto his chest.

Sculpted by combat. Scarred by war.

Covered with black hair.

“Any objection?” His voice was soft, deep.

She forced her gaze to his eyes. They looked darker now. Was it a trick of the light?

He’s waiting for an answer. Say something!

“How did you undress so fast?”

“The battlefield teaches one to do everything fast.” His eyes sparkled. “Well, not everything.”

Did her heart still beat? She couldn’t tell.

His tone was so suggestive.

“You blush, my lady.”

Her hands flew to her cheeks. “And whose fault is that?”

He gave her a rueful smile. “Mine. But if we’re to be friends, I have to speak honestly.”

“About sexual matters?”

“About all matters. Can you live with that?”

She hesitated, then gave him a nod. “I can. And in that vein, what is the condition you proposed?”

“Right. If I’m to smother myself with added linen—”

“Breeches, Sir Robert. They’re just breeches.”

He cocked an eyebrow. “So say you. But if I do that, you must sleep in your chemise only.”

Her jaw dropped. Then she frowned.

“For the sake of comfort.”

“I’m comfortable clad.”

He looked down, and his fingers seized the tie to his breeches. “Fine. If you’d rather I drop my—”

“Stop!” She grumbled. “Very well. I’ll sleep in my chemise.”

He smiled. “I’ll go lie in bed and shut my eyes, if you’d like.”

“I would like.”

“Do you prefer one side of the bed to the other?”

She shrugged. “It matters not.”

“Then I lay claim to the left.”

As soon as the bed creaked beneath his weight, she removed her headdress. Then she disrobed as quickly as she could and scurried to the bed.

“Why such haste?” he asked as she slid beneath the covers.

“My feet are cold.”

“Mine are warm. You’re welcome to—”

“No, Sir Robert. I’ll warm up soon enough.”

Should've Been You (#3 Man Enough) Nicole McLaughlin

Nicole McLaughlin

Publication Date
30 January 2018

Adult Contemporary Romance

Childhood neighbors get a chance at love in Should’ve Been You, an achingly romantic novella in Nicole McLaughlin’s Man Enough series!

National Guardsman Jase Beckford wants to live a quiet life raising cattle and taking care of his mother. His childhood friend and neighbor Hannah is still his best friend, but when he walks into the Walters house one morning and sees her twin sister Becca for the first time in five years, he wonders if he missed out on something special.

Becca Walters has nursed a secret crush on Jase since childhood, but he always preferred Hannah, so she buried her feelings assuming her sister and Jase would one day turn their flirtation into a real relationship. And this Christmas, she is anticipating a proposal of her own, so Jase’s reappearance in her life doesn’t mean anything. Much. Okay, maybe more than Becca would like to admit.

However, when Becca’s sister gets engaged to someone who’s not Jase, Becca and Jase find themselves spending more together. And when secrets are revealed, suddenly those dormant feelings come back to life; but is the possibility of something between them worth risking the happiness of everyone they love?

Should've Been You is about three childhood friends and how the manipulation of a ten year old impacts on the their lives for years to come.

Jase is from an abusive household and joined the army as an escape. Now that he is back, all he wants is a quiet life raising cattles.

Becca is the twin sister to Hannah. They don't have much in common with the exceptions of family and Jase.

Growing up, Jase and Hannah spent most of their time together whilst Becca was on the outside. They are now in their thirties and this remains the case. Becca has given up on her crush on Jase and is moving forward. Out of the blue, one evening Hannah has an announcement which throws both Jase and Becca. This gets them talking to each other, and they discover that they have been living with a misunderstanding that originated from a childhood lie. The reason for their behaviour towards one another is a revelation that neither of them expects. Well, it's all in the past and they can look to the future. There is one problem though, Becca has commitments of her own. There is no denying the sparks between them, but can they change the current situation?

I like the storyline, but the relationship between Jase and Hannah is somewhat convoluted. Her possessiveness and selfishness have caused some damage and she appears to be oblivious as long as she is the centre of attention. She partly redeems herself with her reasons for her insecurities. Becca lives a lie just because that's what one does at that age! She is responsible in her professional life, but acts as teenager in her personal life. Jase is the sensible and down to earth one, out of these three characters. The way everything falls into place at the end is a welcome conclusion.

I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

Nicole wrote her first full length book (6 pages) about the birth of her baby sister, when she was eight years old. She only finished it because her mother bribed her with a Rick Astley cassette tape. Sad, but true. Now her characters are what keep her writing and her subject matter has gotten a little bit deeper and  a lot more romantic. She resides in a small town outside of Kansas City with her husband and three sons. When she isn’t writing, she’s a wedding and portrait photographer, loves to cook, and watch historical dramas or documentaries.

What the Valley Knows by Heather Christie - Excerpt Tour

What The Valley Knows
Heather Christie
Publication date: January 25th 2018
Genres: Romance, Young Adult

Millington Valley is a quintessential small Pennsylvania town: families go back generations. Football rules. Kids drink while adults look the other way. High school is a whirlwind of aspiration and rivalry, friendship and jealousy.

When smart and pretty Molly Hanover moves to town and attracts the attention of the football team’s hero, Wade Thornton—a nice guy with a bad drinking habit—longtime friendships are threatened and a popular cheerleader tries to turn the school against Molly.

The young couple’s future is shattered when Wade, drunk, wrecks his truck and Molly is thrown through the windshield.

She wakes from a coma to find her beauty marred and her memory full of holes. As she struggles to heal, she becomes sure that something terrible happened before the accident. And there is somebody in the valley who doesn’t want her to remember.

Molly smiled, blushing, tongue-tied. She felt stupid because she could see that they were the cool kids, and she wanted them to like her.

“What’s your name?” Legs casually hooked his hands together and straightened his elbows so that his triceps contracted.

“I’m Molly.” Her cheeks flushed again as she tucked her book into her pack and stood.

“Pretty name—” Legs nodded towards her book. “And smart. AP English? My sister has to read the same book.”

“We’re having a party Friday night at the quarry,” Tank said. “There might not be much to drink,” Shady said.

Legs smiled—the kind of smile that was used to getting whatever it wanted—and said, “I’d be happy to take you. Introduce you to everybody. Everybody who’s anybody, that is.”

She hesitated, her fingers tightening around the railing. They watched her.

“What’s your number?” Legs reached for the phone that was tucked into his white compression pants. “I’ll text you about the party.”

“Um . . . I have to ask my mom.” Oh my god! What a stupid thing to say!

“She has to ask her mom,” Legs said, perplexed. They all looked dumfounded for a moment. But Legs said, “Sure. Okay. So can I have your number?”

“Sure,” said Molly, and then she told him.

Shady dropped his sunglasses over his eyes. “We’re meeting in the stadium parking lot around eight to ride up together.”

Tank pointed across the street. “Behind the school, that’s where the stadium is.”

“No shit, Sherlock.” Legs winked at her.

“Don’t mind these dummies!” He laughed and ran his hand through his spiky hair.

“Move it.” He whacked Shady on the back.

“Hope you can come.” Tank smiled.

“I’ll try.”

“Keep the booze part on the down low,” Shady said. “I mean, don’t tell your mom.”

“No. No, I won’t.” Molly couldn’t help but grin.

They picked up their gear and walked away, their voices fading. Halfway across the fairgrounds, Legs turned around and waved with a big smile. Molly waved in return. The guys passed through the shade of the trees and back into the sunlight.

They stopped on the curb, their silhouettes distinct against the school.

She was invited to a party.

Maybe she should go. Stop being the shy girl.

Maybe she’d make some friends, then she wouldn’t have to lie to her mom anymore.

Molly picked up her bag and stepped into the sun. She raised her hand over her brow and squinted into the brightness.

The school’s plywood windows looked as if they had double-winked at her. The eyes seemed frozen mid-wink, uncertain whether to open all the way or shut completely.

People reinvented themselves all the time, right?

Maybe she could be somebody different here.

Maybe she could even forgive herself about what happened to her dad.

Baby Girl by CM Stunich - Excerpt Tour

Baby Girl
C.M. Stunich
Publication date: January 29th 2018
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

He died that night, alone, in the rain, in the dark, the boy that called me baby girl.

I was only seventeen; we were going to be together forever.

On his way to pick me up for prom, he swerved. I’ll never know what made him do it, what killed the boy I’d loved my whole life. With roses clutched in his hand, he bled out in icy wetness all alone.

His best friend is here though, and I’m pretty sure he loves me.

But after the accident, I left for a year and didn’t look back.

Now I’m back in town and my heart is like shattered glass.

Do I pick up the pieces and risk getting cut? And do I let another boy call me baby girl?

“What?” I whisper, because we both know what he just said.

Just like he did at the funeral.
Baby Girl.
Baby Girl.

The words that trigger me more than anything … Baby fucking Girl.

Jerking away from Phoenix's arms, I stumble and fall from the porch, knees sinking into the mud. My breath chokes out of me as I scramble up, Phoenix's fingers curling around my arm and jerking me back around to face him.

Rain plasters his hair to his forehead, the same way it did to Codrick's when he was lying dead on the road.

“Ey girl, listen to me!” Phoenix is shouting, but I try to pull away from him anyway.

He's strong, but so am I. I've spent the last four hundred and twelve days working out every spare second I can get.

We end up tussling, falling into the mud and rolling around until Phoenix literally pins me to the ground.

“I'm not letting you drive away like this!” he screams, my muscles straining as I struggle to pull my arms from his grip. “No way, no how am I letting you go, me.”

Phoenix yanks me to my feet and picks me up, tossing me over his shoulder.

I kick and flail, pushing myself off his muscular back and biting him.

That's how pissed off I am.

Except … his skin tastes good, musky and sweet at the same time. There's a hint of that mint soap my mother makes, a bit of sweat, the icy drench of rain.

Phoenix growls beneath me, a rumbling beast of hard muscles and tattoos, and then sets me down on the porch.

His girlfriend is still standing there in an oversized pink t-shirt, big blonde curls frothing around her face.

As soon as Phoenix lets go of me, I shove past her and she makes a sound as I smear mud across her perfect arm. Heading through the narrow living room, I push open the door on the far end that used to lead outside and to the outhouse.

Freshman year of high school, my dad came out here and built the Benoits a bathroom with a toilet, sink, tub, and shower. Hell, it's nicer than the one at our own house. My dad never does anything in half-measures. He takes fucking pride in his work.

I slip inside and slam the door behind me, locking it and stripping off all my muddy clothes. Rinsing them as best I can in the sink, I turn on the hot heat of the shower and climb under it, sitting down on the ground with my arms wrapped around my knees.

A few minutes later, after the bathroom is shrouded with steam, I stand back up and open the little window on my left, letting the cool night suck some of the heat from the air. It feels so good to stand like that, hot water scalding my flesh while freezing cold air fills my lungs.

“You hit like a tank and bite like a snake,” Phoenix mumbles, making me jump. I jerk back part of the curtain to glare at him, standing there with a black tank on, like he's got something to hide underneath it.

“I don' remember sweet Embry being so damn feisty.” He pauses and looks me straight in the face, making me acutely aware of my nakedness. My nipples harden to points and I swallow the sudden lump in my throat.

I haven't seen the man in four hundred and twelve days.

He has a girlfriend standing right outside this door.

And …

“What the fuck are you doing in here? I locked the door for a reason. Get out.”

“First off, you know I can pick a lock like nobody else, me. Second, this might be the only moment I get to talk some sense into you. You trapped in dere unless you want me to see you naked.”

Phoenix smiles, but the expression is tight, haunted, far away.

He's so fucked-up.
