The Shadow Weave

(Spell Weaver #2)
Publication date: January 12th 2018
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

Clio might be a nymph living in exile among humans. And she might possess the rare ability to mimic any magic she sees.

And she might have just seriously ticked off the most powerful family of spell weavers in the Underworld.

But she is not in love with an incubus.

Lyre is the rebellious black sheep of said weaver family, and he’s the only reason she survived her recent Underworld “vacation.” He’s also the sexiest thing she’s ever seen. Together, they have to track down a catastrophically dangerous magic—a magic he created, she sort of stole, and they both lost—before his family gets their hands on it. And that means fighting alongside him in a desperate attempt to avert complete disaster.

But she is definitely not in love with him. At least, she’s pretty sure she’s not.

Mostly sure. Maybe sure? …Crap.

4 Stars

The Shadow Weave is all about otherwordlers living in our world and the barriers the two main characters face to get back to the otherworld. It's potent, dangerous, action packed, humorous and magical with a touch of romance.

Lyre is an incubus and a master weaver who has lost one of his spells which could prove to be destructive in the wrong hands. He is stranded on earth.

Clio is a nymph with a rare magical power. She too is stranded on earth and looking for a way back to the otherworld.

Lyre and Clio helped each other to escape a sticky situation and they have to work together to achieve their goals. They get along very well and Clio is not adverse to Lyre's charm. For an incubus, he seems to be able to control his impulse with Clio. That doesn't mean that he is not attracted to her. Respect to him!

They are both being persued by various supernatural beings. Hades has sent his soul weavers after Lyre because of his talent in weaving spells. As for Clio, her rare talent is a secret until she shows her hand when saving Lyre from a fatal situation. His reaction to her revelation is totally opposite to what she anticipated. Despite trying to stay in the friend zone, their attraction gets the better of them on a couple of occasions. Watching their apprehension about becoming too involved is rather mesmerising.

I like the way Clio and Lyre watch each other's back, no matter what. Even the use of magic spells can't get in the way they want to protect one another. In their zeal to find their way to the otherworld to retrieve Lyre's precious creation, they put their trust in the wrong person. This proves to be even more dangerous than any other situation that they have faced. The irony of it all is that the one who wants to get rid of them is the one who saves the day.

I haven't read the previous installment and some of the names of the characters went over my head, but there were enough information for me to be able to piece the most important aspects together. This story is well delivered and the characters are very well painted. It's fast, exhilarating and romantic. There isn't a dull moment as there is either danger, humour, magic or romance at every turn. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and the end has left me wanting for more. Lyre and Clio are exceptional characters.

I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

Author Bio

Annette Marie is the author of the Amazon best-selling Steel & Stone series, which includes Goodreads Choice Award nominee Yield the Night, and fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced adventures and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it's not quite that bad) with her comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat— Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
