Set in 1800s in Scotland, this is a second chance romance with treachery, jealousy, misunderstandings and love. Lost and found!

Niall and Aisla were introduced in the previous book where they were teenagers and madly in love. However, six years has passed since and things are very different.

Jealousy and conniving pulled this young couple apart and they went their separate ways. Aisla went to Paris whilst Niall has become a responsible and respected Laird.

Although, they are so far apart, they still have mixed feelings for each other. Love, hate and resentment. When Aisla receives a proposition from her best friend, Jules, she tells him about her past and they come back to Scotland in order for Niall to agree to a divorce.

She is no longer the naive girl who left those years ago, but her spirits remain. He has a successful business and has discovered a talent in craft. As expected, the first meeting doesn't go well. Aisla acts with indifference and Niall with contempt. They come to an agreement with conditions attached. Niall's condition is for Aisla to stay with him. He has revenge in mind, but she is not easily outwitted. It turns into an ongoing mind game.

During that time, Aisla discovers that much have changed about Niall and he is stricken by her beauty, grace and confidence. The more reason to hate her! Underneath, they both still long for one another, but neither of them is prepared to give in. When they do, the green monster who has been lurking around steps in to tear them apart once more.

Niall and Aisla feel betrayed, and any hope of rekindling their relationship is shattered. Niall makes a rash decision which ironically enough, prompts the troublemaker to show her true colours. It then becomes apparent that she too has been played. Even though the signs of her devious actions were apparent, the extent of the damage done is totally unexpected. Although it has its reward, the twist here is heartbreaking and destructive. Is it too late for the damage to be repaired?

This story is compelling and captivating. The relationship between Niall and Aisla is full of different kinds of emotions, but the end is absolutely delightful.

I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

Review
5 Stars
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is an absolute gem. It's cleverly crafted and nicely paced.

Verity's husband, the Duke of Blackburn has been missing for six and a half years. She has settled into a comfortable routine with her six year old son, Beau.

Rufus isn't the most popular of Dukes and his disappearance is a mystery.

Verity is finally making decisions to improve the running of the estate when Rufus appears out of the blues. Upon seeing him, she is filled with dread, but his composure surprises her. He isn't the same person anymore. She gives him the benefit of the doubt, but keeps waiting for the penny to drop. Only it doesn’t!

His interactions with Beau are more than could be expected of a loving father. He takes an active role in the running of the estate and includes Verity in every aspect. He is responsible and honourable! Feelings start to develop. Does she dare hope for a better future?

Going through the books they uncover discrepancies and slowly they start to peel the layers. There is a lot more going on and when Rufus reveals his secret, what they are building could easily crumble. They discover that their enemies are closer to home. Blackmail, fraud and murder are involved.

Watching the mysteries unravel is mesmerising. This multi layered plot doesn't readily give anything away and it's rewarding to see the villains being exposed. It's a fascinating story where honour, love and loyalty prevail. Outstanding!

I received an eARC and the views expressed are my own.

Excerpt

The day was warm and bright, and she was looking forward to being outside. The door she’d come through suddenly burst open. Beau dashed out, his laughter immediately filling the courtyard.

He was quickly followed by Rufus, who chased him along the edge of the garden to the center path. Beau didn’t slow as he rounded the corner, and his feet slipped on the cobblestones. He fell down, landing on his side.

Verity dropped the blanket and ran toward him, but Rufus beat her by quite a bit. It was then that she realized he hadn’t been using his top speed to chase the boy. She’d seen that when he’d caught Racer that day at Mr. Maynard’s farm.

Rufus picked Beau up and set him on his feet and squatted down in front of him.“All right?”

Verity had expected Beau to cry, and his face had gone slightly pale. She lowered herself next to Rufus.“Did that scare you?” she asked, stroking Beau’s arm from shoulder to elbow and back again.

Beau nodded. Then a moment later, he ran to the top of the stairs leading to the courtyard.“Comeon, Papa, catch me!”

Rufus stood and offered his hand to Verity to help her rise. She wasn’t wearing gloves, and neither was he. It was the first time their flesh had touched, and it was like grabbing lightning. Or how she imagined it to be—electrifying and hot, and it left a lasting impression.

“Please don’t chase him down the stairs. He already fell once.” She turned to Beau and called,“Please be careful.”

“I am being careful, Mama. And don’t worry about the stairs. I ran down them to the kitchen passage and didn’t fall.”

She looked over at Rufus.“Isthat right?”

His gaze drifted to the side, and he hesitated a moment.“Er,yes. We were playing knights and villains.”

“Which one were you?”

“It was my turn to be the knight.”

Verity frowned and shifted a glance toward Beau.“Idon’t like thinking of my boy as a villain.”

“It’s pretend,” Rufus said.“But if it makes you feel better, he only chooses to be the villain because he likes to be chased.”

“Can’t the villain chase the knight?”

His mouth tipped into a crooked smile, and her stomach did a flip. It was as if lightning had struck again.“It’s pretend. We can do whatever we like.” He looked back toward the basket and the blanket on the ground.“I’ll get the things for the picnic.” He turned and started along the path.

“I can grab the blanket,” she offered.

He waved a hand.“I’ve got it.”

Verity went to Beau instead. She took his hand, and they descended into the courtyard, then veered right toward the gateway to the stable yard.“Perhaps I should play knights and villains.” She wondered why they hadn’t done that before and felt bad. It was a stark reminder of how much he’d missed not having a father.

“But you’re a girl.” Beau sounded scandalized.

Rufus met them as they approached the gate.“What’swrong with your mother being a girl?”

“She wants to play knights and villains.” He made a face that clearly showed what he thought of that idea.

Verity was caught between laughter and disappointment.

“It would be better if she joined us,” Rufus said, drawing Beau’s sharp attention.“A knight needs a fair maiden to rescue.”

“Then I am definitely going to be the villain. I don’t wanna rescue a girl.” He frowned, then sent his mother an apologetic glance.“ExceptI do want to save you, Mama.”

Verity surrendered to the laughter. “Thank you.”

“But Papa should be the one to save you. That’s what dukes do, right?”

“That’s what husbands do,” Rufus corrected,“whether they are a duke or not.”
