Murder on the Lake of Fire (#1 Mourning Dove Mysteries) Mikel J Wilson - Blog Tour

Murder on the Lake of Fire

(Mourning Dove Mysteries, #1)
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: December 1st 2017
Genres: LGBTQ+, Mystery, Romance

At twenty-three and with a notorious case under his belt, Emory Rome has already garnered fame as a talented special agent for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

His career is leapfrogging over his colleagues, but the jumping stops when he’s assigned a case he fought to avoid – to investigate an eerie murder in the Smoky Mountain hometown he had abandoned. This mysterious case of a dead teen ice-skater once destined for the pros is just the beginning. In a small town bursting with envious friends and foes, Rome’s own secrets lie just below the surface. The rush to find the murderer before he strikes again pits Rome against artful private investigator, Jeff Woodard. The PI is handsome and smart, seducing Rome and forcing him to confront childhood demons, but Woodard has secrets of his own. He might just be the killer Rome is seeking.

Excerpt

Emory followed a directional sign for the administrative offices to a long corridor. Just past a bathroom for each sex, he came to a windowless room. Adjacent to the room’s lone desk sat a table featuring neatly aligned rows of Algarotti Smoky Mountain Springs bottled water, a glass-door refrigerator chilling bottles of flavored water and a sign inviting visitors to take one. The desk was positioned to the right of the entrance to a smaller hallway that ended at a door. Seated at the desk was someone familiar.

“Hello,” Emory said to the man he had seen leaving the Algarotti house earlier.

The man closed the desk drawer he was rifling through and lifted a stolid face that softened when he saw Emory. “Hi again,” he replied with a flawless smile framed by mischievous lips. His pea coat was now unbuttoned, exposing a tight blue sweater molded over square pecs. He leaned back in the chair, interlocked his fingers over his chest and peered at Emory with eyes as sparkling green as the Southern Lights.

 “Are you following me?”

The stranger’s question and his assuredness knocked Emory’s demeanor off balance. “No,” he answered with more volume than intended. “No, I’m here to see Victor Algarotti.”

“So am I.” The man erected himself without using his hands and walked to the front of the desk to stand before Emory. Both six-foot-two, their eyes locked – an alignment that rattled Emory. “Jeff Woodard,” the man said as he extended his hand.

Emory shook his hand and told him his name. “What do you mean, you want to see him too? Is Victor not here?”

Before Jeff could explain, another man exited the nearby bathroom and approached them. A work badge hanging from his right collar informed them that his name was Scot Trousdale. In his late twenties or early thirties, Scot stood about five inches shorter than the other two men, but the wide back and thick shoulders pushing against the seams of his dress shirt gave him an imposing presence nonetheless. The curls of his dark brown hair twisted around cauliflower ears and an attractive face misshaped by more than a couple of punches. A fighter. Wrestling or MMA. Scot’s dull eyes looked at them from behind rimless glasses that slid down the wide bridge of his nose. “Gentlemen. Which one of you is Mr. Woodard?” he asked in a voice lighter than his looks would suggest.

“That would be me,” responded Jeff with a slight wave.

Scot pulled some papers from the printer at his desk, stapled them and handed them to Jeff. “To save time, Mr. Algarotti dictated all the information you’ll need to start your investigation. Oh wait.” He retrieved a picture of Britt from his top drawer and gave it to Jeff. “Here’s a picture.”

“Excuse me.” Emory glared at Jeff. “Who are you?”

Jeff smirked at him. “We met earlier.”

“I know we met earlier. Why are you receiving information about my victim?”

Jeff flashed his right palm. “Let’s not get possessive. I’m a private investigator—”

Scot looked over his glasses at Emory.

 “And who are you?”

“I’m Emory Rome from the TBI.”

Jeff taunted him by asking, “Do you have a badge?”

“Of course I do.” Emory retrieved his badge and showed it to both of them, eliciting a smile from Jeff.

Scot stared at Emory for a moment. “Have we met before?”

Emory answered, “I don’t believe so,” although he questioned if they had run into each other when he lived in Barter Ridge as a kid.

Scot seemed to register a sudden glimmer of realization, but if he did, he kept it to himself. “Hang on one second.” He went to his computer to print another copy of the document he had given Jeff. “Mr. Algarotti had me compile all the information you might need.” He stapled the papers and handed them to Emory. “Mr. Algarotti asked that no time be wasted before getting started.”

Emory glanced at the top page. “How thorough.”

“I don’t have another picture, though,” Scot told him.

“Maybe you two could share it.”

Jeff snapped a picture of the photo with his phone. “I’ll text it to you. What’s your number?” After a silent second, he added, “It’s only fair. You already have mine.”

So it was his number. Emory shook his head. “I have my own picture.” He turned back to Scot to ask, “Where’s Victor’s office?”

“As I said, he asked that you – I guess both of you now – not waste time.”

“I need to talk to him,” insisted Emory.

“That won’t be necessary,” Scot countered.

“Everything he would tell you is in the document I just gave you.”

Emory’s stern face matched the tone of his voice when he said, “It wasn’t a request.”

Without turning his head, Scot pointed his ink pen over his shoulder to the hallway behind him. “End of the hall.”

Emory walked past the desk, his footsteps echoed by Jeff’s. “Where are you going?” he asked the PI.

“I want to talk to him too.”

“I need to talk to him alone. This is a murder investigation.” Emory continued walking until Jeff grabbed his arm.

“This isn’t my first murder case.”

“Really? What others have you worked on? Who were the victims?”

Jeff counted on his fingers. “Lara Crawford, Zelda Princeton, Jill Valentino—”

“Why do all of your victims sound like video game characters? Look, I have no unsolved mysteries under my belt. I’m not going to let an amateur muddle up one of my investigations.”

“Muddle? Who says that outside a Christmas song? I got news for you. It’s our investigation, and I’m not going to muddle up anything.”

“What were you doing at his desk when I arrived?”

“It’s called investigating.” Jeff pointed toward Scot’s desk. “Dilbert there could be our killer.”

Emory continued to Victor’s closed office, telling Jeff, “Don’t follow me.”

5 Stars
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Embarking on this journey with Cross and Catherine has been sheer delight. Watching them grow from children, to adolescents and then into adulthood is quite an experience. A phenomenal couple!

Cross is the the Donati boss and he hasn't changed much. He is still loyal, responsible, loving and beautifully arrogant.

Catherine is making good progress in her business, but still has a lot to learn.

Five years later and their love goes from strength to strength despite everything that's thrown at them. Juggling their time between their personal life and their business life is not easy. Whenever they think that they might have a reprieve something else crops up.

Cross is suddenly faced with a situation which puts the whole family in danger. He does the honourable thing and stands by his men. Respect! Things get out of hands, but he is no quitter. He will find a solution.

Catherine is going over her own stumbling blocks. She finds herself having to address some difficult issues with no real back up. She is no quitter either! As hard as it might be, she will resolve these problems.

With their additional personal responsibilities, they crave a work life balance. Things get harder before they get better, but they make the most of the time they have together. Will they be able to relax eventually and enjoy what they have?

It's refreshing to see that Cross and Dante have come such a long way, after everything that's gone before. There are a lot of changes. Danger is aplenty. One thing doesn't change though. The depth of Cross and Catherine's love. Remarkable! Cece is a handful, but fun with it. I have enjoyed every single part of this trilogy, and sad in a way that it has come to an end. The epilogue is magnificent. This is a love story to remember. Fa-bu-lous darlings!

I was kindly issued with an eARC from the author and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

No Place Like You (#3 A Cloud Bay Novel) Emma Douglas

Author
Emma Douglas

Publication Date
5 December 2017

Genre
Contemporary Romance

Home—in the island village of Cloud Bay—is where the heart is. . .
Leah Santelli always knew that Zach Harper, son of a rock legend and her best friend’s brother, was painfully out of reach. Then, on the night of her eighteenth birthday, Leah shocked herself by asking for—and receiving—the gift she wanted: one night of passion with Zach before he left town to pursue his rock star dreams. Now, years later, Zach is back in Cloud Bay to record his first solo album. His return could also be Leah’s big chance to step up her own music career. But getting the producing credit she needs means spending long hours with Zach in the recording studio…and falling back into the habit of longing for him, for better or worse.
Zach used to believe that a man must put his past behind him. But coming back home for Cloud Bay’s famed music festival has allowed him to finally make amends with his family and, much to his surprise, reunite with Leah. He might have left her once but now it seems he can’t stay away. Trouble is, even though the heat between them burns hotter than ever, Leah has old wounds in need of healing before she can give Zach a real chance. Can he find a way to convince her that they can make more than just great music together—and that she’s the one that he wants for all time?

When I read the previous book in the series, I fell in love with the beautiful setting of Cloud Bay and the captivating storyline. No Place Like You is just as captivating.

Zach, a native of Cloud Bay left to persue his musical career, leaving his friends and family with pain, heartache and resentment. Ten years later and he has returned to explore a different aspect of his career.

Leah is Zach's sister's best friend and works in their family music studio. She hasn't had much luck in her love life and is now looking to advance in her career as a music producer.

Zach's return stirs old memories and a longing that Leah didn't expect. With him going solo and her new career aspiration, it's the perfect opportunity for them to work together. After some gentle persuasion, Zach agrees to give it a go. Leah keeps telling herself that she can keep this arrangement on a strictly business basis. Somehow, she can’t forget about what happened between them all those years ago and decides to take matters into her own hands. Zach is game. They agree that it's a temporary arrangement as Zach would be leaving again sooner or later. Easier said than done! They spend quality time making sweet music in the studio as well as in the bedroom.

When the plans for the music festival take an unexpected turn, Zach reverts to his old self. He leaves an emotional turmoil behind, only this time, he gets a dose of his own medicine. Can he make amends or is it too late to salvage what could have been the best thing for them?

Although Zach can be stubborn and oblivious to his true feelings, he is a lovable character. Leah shows her strength of character when she takes a chance and hopes for the best. She is a loyal friend and adorable with it. This second chance story has its up and downs. There is love and passion. Mistakes are made. Lessons are learnt. It's a beautiful storyline in an idealistic setting. A rewarding read, indeed.

I was kindly issued with an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

Emma Douglas has read like a wild thing since she was small. She discovered romance novels at an age that way probably way too young but she survived unscathed. When she realized you could make up stories as well as read them, she started taking notes about what the characters wandering through her head were telling her and then, eventually, books happened.

Before the books happened she did the usual things (was a band geek (and a geek generally), had crushes on rock stars and fictional characters, spent chunks of her summers on an island beach, got a degree in something sensible that doesn’t involve writing about kissing, became a black belt in internet procrastination, fell down the rabbit-hole of craft, traveled a bit, indulged her love of baked goods, got bossed around by cats, began a quest for the perfect margarita, and napped to recover from all of the above.

She still does most of that plus the writing thing from a tiny house which her feline overlords have kindly agreed to share with her.

To the Duke, with Love (#2 The Rakes of St James) Amelia Grey

Author
Amelia Grey

Publication Date

Genre
Historical Romance

There may be times when a gentleman is desperate to gain a lady’s attention, but a gentleman would never resort to desperate measures to obtain it.
―A Proper Gentleman’s Guide to Wooing the Perfect Lady

Sloane Knox, the Duke of Hawksthorn is guardian for his sweet, younger sister. Due to his misguided past as one of the infamous Rakes of St James, Hawk is hoping to avoid the Season by securing a match for her before it begins. He has the perfect gentleman in mind, but for one infuriating―and unexpectedly intoxicating―obstacle: the intended groom’s own sister, Miss Loretta Quick.

Having narrowly avoided her own arranged marriage to an unacceptable nobleman, Loretta is determined that her dear brother―a gentle, good-natured soul―should marry for love. Matching wits with Hawk may be her greatest challenge yet. . .until she realizes it may also be her greatest pleasure. For the young duke’s irresistible charm has not only begun to crumble her stubborn resolve, it has claimed her heart in true love as well. . .

To The Duke, with Love is tale of three youngsters who played a prank without thinking of the repercussions. They are now Dukes with responsibities, and that careless action wants payback.

Hawk, the Duke of Hawksthorn is trying to protect his younger sister's good name. With the new season coming up, this could be the ideal opportunity for revenge as a result of what he did so many years ago. The best way to avoid any scandal is to find her a husband.

Loretta is the ward of an Earl who is very disappointed with her since she turned down an arranged marriage. She now lives in a secluded countrynhouse and no longer allowed to socialise.

On a cold and wet day, Hawk appears on Loretta's doorsteps, looking for her brother. Unfortunately, he is absent and despite Hawk's reluctance, she convinces him to divulge the reason for this long journey. She is a romantic, and having escaped her own arranged marriage, she wants the best for her brother. True love and happiness. Hawk is determined, but then again so is she, and the head butting begins.

Hawk's mission is complicated by his attraction to the strong and witty Loretta. He has met his match! Loretta is quite taken by him, despite the vow she made three years ago. Their interactions are comical at times and there is no denying the strong chemistry between them. Hawk goes in battle mode to win her over. He always wins his battles. Can he win this one?

This also shows the fate of the most deprived, living in London. Loretta shows love and compassion and despite Hawk's reputation, he is loving and sympathetic. Her brother Paxton is carefree and easygoing, but means business when it matters. Adele, Hawk's sister is an endearing young lady. I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions between Hawk and Loretta. Even with the awful side of poverty, it's a light and entertaining read.

I was kindly issued with an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

4 reasons why I LOVE
 to write romances!
Guest post by Cristiane Serruya

Hello and thanks for hosting me. I’m so happy to be here with you and your readers today.

Since 2011, I’ve been immersed in the written word—penning romance novels, to be exact. The process of crafting and getting a work through the publishing machine—especially the indie world—can be a lonely and hard path but when my new imaginary friends walk out of my romances, they’re worth all of grueling pain I submit my wrists and fingers to. Here are four reasons why I have been hooked by love stories.

1. The characters

The men! Handsome or scarred, funny or brooding, overbearing or supportive. Dark-haired, blond, paled skin, tanned and everything in between! Now put them together with blondes, brunettes or red-heads; thin or curved or toned; opinionated and bold or delicate and shy! Oh, my! To make it even better, throw in a couple of kids—I love stories with smart kids! Of course, makes it even funnier if we have a few criminals in the story, too. There, I have a bunch of new friends—and enemies—for me to play with for a while.

2. I get to create stories

Imagine those said characters meeting over a business meeting, as in The Complete TRUST Series; or fighting for a cure for a sick child, as in Forevermore, and the sparks flying over a heated argument or a nice gesture.

And then imagine them doing it. Yeah! And some revengeful ex-partner or dark secret, which threatens their relationship. I decide who loves and hates; who lives and dies! I can totally transform a person I know in a good or a horrible character. I can even take my revenge on the ones I don’t like much and create a whole new ending for a situation gone wrong. It’s freeing!

3. The research

Learning is a passion of mine. In order to create believable characters, research is necessary. For example, Tavish Uilleam MacCraig, the lead male character of Love Painted in Red, who appeared on my first release Entwined Fates, TRUST Series #1 and was supposed to be a secondary character, grew so much as a character during TRUST Series that he demanded his story to be told. As it unfolded, and from it I have already Damaged Love, which features Tavish’s best friend, Lord Richard Smith, and after comes the story of Richard’s older brother, Lord Hugh Smith.

All the three of them are veterans of war—I am always in awe of those men and women who sacrifice themselves to make this world safer.

We don’t have a strong military here in Brazil and I wanted them to be believable veteran dealing with PTSD, living with disabilities, having invisible scars, for the readers to feel their pains. So I interviewed many veterans online. It was an enlightening and heartbreaking experience and it helped me make Tavish and Richard come out beautifully—or so I like to think—with their physical and psychological scars and yet full of life strength and vigor.

4. The happily ever after

With all the horrible things happening in the world, unnecessary killings, religious and racial strife, it’s great to be able to escape to a world where my characters have survived bad things and are still able to find a fulfilling and healing relationship with a happy ending—and don’t forget the steamy sex I got to create. But sometimes, I get out of a story emotionally tired; so tired, I need a break.

It was exactly the case of Forevermore, Olivia, Alek, and Ava’s heart-wrenching and heart-warming story that I needed a break before I jump into the skin of Benedict, who is blind, and Natalya, from Evermore. Ah, what did I do during my break? I wrote a light, funny and suspenseful romance.  So, pre-order already Royal Love, Last Royals Series #1.
