Breathless by Celeste Bradley & Susan Donovan

Author (s)
Celeste Bradley & Susan Donovan

Publication Date
12 June 2018

Women's Fiction

In Breathless, bestselling authors Celeste Bradley and Susan Donovan will sweep you away—across continents and centuries, combining the best of all worlds in one unforgettable romantic saga.

She was “the Swan.” London’s premiere courtesan. Men want to be with her. Women loathe her success and yet admire her beauty, her riches, her independence. But when the jealous wife of her lover moves to have the Swan banished from her home on the high seas, she winds up crashed against Spain’s rocky coast with no shoes, no clothes—and no name. Taken in by a tortured, sensuous man known as The Artist, the Swan comes to know the woman she wants to be—her artist’s siren.
When Art Professor Brenna Anderson is in danger of losing her post at Harvard, the rule-following, prim professor is at a loss of how to salvage the shreds of her life. But when a new painting in the mysterious Siren collection is discovered in a dusty old house in France, Brenna does the unthinkable—hops on a plane to uncover the identity of the beautiful, enigmatic woman who is the subject of the paintings.
There’s just one hitch—the frustrating, irritating, bold and beautiful art hunter Fitch Wilder is also looking for the Siren. He’s been a thorn in Brenna’s professional side for years, but when their individual quests lead them to team up despite being enemies, a whole new sumptuous world of art and culture opens up for the two of them. And with it, they enter a realm of passion and love…

4 Stars

This fascinating story is a quest about discovering the history of a series of paintings known as the Siren. An art professor and an art hunter are archenemies, seeking the mystery behind the paintings for different reasons. An interesting read!

Brenna is an art professor at Harvard. She is fascinated by the Siren series of paintings. When her job is at risk, she takes a chance and goes after the history of the mysterious artist and his fascinating subject.

Fitch is an art hunter who has just uncovered one of the Siren's paintings and is now on a quest to discover the location of the remaining paintings.

Brenna has come across some information which might lead her to the identities of the artist and his alluring subject. Upon arriving in London, she meets non other than Fitch, her sworn enemy. Underneath her "apparent" loathing, she goes weak at the knees whenever she comes into contact with him, but she doesn't believe in love and relationships. Fitch, himself is quite besotted by her and intends to get into her good graces.

When it becomes apparent that they have information which could prove useful to both of them, they call a truce and pair up to follow the breadcrumbs to the origin of these paintings. They embark on an exciting journey and as they spend time together, feelings change. Besides, Brenna has been going on assumptions about Fitch and now that she knows the truth, things are different. The problem is that he slips up and might ruin any of his chances.

Together, they uncover the truth about the Swan, a courtesan whose disappearance has been a mystery. The love story from several hundred years ago is bittersweet and runs parallel to Brenna's and Fitch's story in the present day. It's  beautifully crafted and the characters and events are captured vividly.

I like the storyline and its uniqueness. It's emotive and captivating. Well worth reading.

Genres: Contemporary, Romance,
Young Adult

Family, abandonment, and forbidden romance are at the core of SM Koz’s powerful and emotionally charged novel about a teen who falls for her foster brother.

When Hailey Brown is removed from her home and put into foster care, all she wants is a safe, comfortable place where she can finish school and move on with her life. It’s not easy adjusting to a new school and a new life, but Mr. and Mrs. Campbell and their teenage son, Brad, welcome Hailey with open arms.

As Hailey begins to adjust to her new life, she and Brad grow closer. For the first time, Hailey feels like she might have a real shot at a future. Soon, however, Hailey realizes her relationship with Brad has crossed the line from friendship into something more. But being with Brad would mean giving up the perfect life that Hailey has waited so long to have.

Can Hailey and Brad resist the feelings that are developing between them—or will they risk it all to be together?

Chosen by readers like you for Macmillan’s young adult imprint Swoon Reads, SM Koz delivers a powerful debut about the ups and downs of being a foster child.

4 Stars

This is a heartfelt coming of age story of life in foster care. It's very well portrayed with realistic characters. I absolutely love the storyline.

Hailey is seventeen with a difficult upbringing. Neglected by her mother, she relies on Chase, her boyfriend who appears to be always there for her.

Brad is from an affluent family and the popular guy in his school. He is the quarterback of his football team and has his own dreams, but his father has other expectations.

When Hailey is kicked out of the last of her many foster homes, she is placed with Brad's family. They welcome her with open arms and she finally feels that she has found a home and a family. The friendship developing between her and Brad is comfortable until they realise that there is more to their friendship. The next step is just as natural and comfortable, but there are rules whilst in foster care. Breaking these rules would come with a high cost for Hailey!

Then comes the incident in Brad's home and instantly Hailey becomes "guilty". The disappointment and pain that she goes through is palpable. She is resigned to her fate, but then the truth behind the incident comes to light and although she is relieved, trusting and forgiving evades her. The betrayal doesn't really come as a surprise, but Brad owning up to his mistakes is admirable. His perseverance pays off and it ends on a beautiful note. I enjoyed reading the whole story. Brad and Hailey truly held my attention. I would recommend to readers of all ages.

Cozen by Bethany-Kris - Blog Tour

by Bethany-Kris
Publication Date: June 4, 2018
Genres: Adult, Romantic Suspense, Organized Crime. Erotic, Heist Romance

coz-en (kuz-uhn)
1. trick or deceive.
 obtain by deception.
She was named most appropriately.

Cozen Taylor has more than earned her place as one of North America's most successful thieves. Her name is whispered amongst criminal elite as the go-to thief when someone needs a heist.

She has never failed.

A call from the Miami-based Astor family could change all that with a job that seems almost impossible to complete. The mark should be simple, a stolen family heirloom, the man who has kept it hidden for over twenty years, and six months to return the piece to its rightful owners.

Nothing is ever that easy.

Three-hundred million for a successful heist. No smart thief would turn the offer down. Cozen didn't expect a complication like him to put a kink in her plans, though.

Sargon Makritall, dark, gorgeous, and entirely dangerous. For her life, her heart, and for the success of the heist.

The last thing Cozen needs to be thinking about is Sargon, and how she can get him into her bed  especially when he just happens to be her mark's bodyguard. The thrill of the job has never been more addicting to Cozen, and she will risk everything to make the heist a success.

But at what cost?

From author Bethany-Kris comes a whole new world. A North American network full of criminals battling to stay on top, and painting the streets red in war as they dabble in the game of betrayal. Malicious, cunning, forbidden, and violent, welcome to The Empires and Badlands.

5 Stars

This is so intense that it kept me on my toes from the beginning. Putting it down is hard to do!

Cozen didn't have the best start in life, but got lucky with her adoptive family. She is now a skilled thief who never fails.

Sargon is a man of many talents who doesn't stay in one place for long. He has itchy feet and believes that home is where the heart is.

Cozen is called upon by a powerful family to "retrieve" a family heirloom and she can hardly refuse as the reward is immense. Besides, she likes the challenge. Jett, a millionaire is Cozen's next target. He takes a shine to her when he meets her at a restaurant where she is working as a waitress. It's the perfect opportunity for her to complete a successful heist. She doesn't expect Jett's bodyguard, Sargon. A look from him turns her legs to jelly. The attraction between them is hard to ignore and the heat is near combustible. Will she resist this powerful pull, or will she throw caution to the wind and risk the potentially dangerous implications?

The attraction between Sargo and Cozen is intense from the first time they meet. Their interactions are sizzling hot and passionate at the same time. It's an addictive read and what comes at the end is gobsmacking. There are no indications whatsoever throughout the book how this might end. Absolutely beautiful. A piece of genius. Intricately crafted!

I received an eARC and the views are my own.

“Who is the one playing dangerous games now, Jett?”

His boss didn’t answer because his attention was now captured by something else entirely. Sargon chanced a look over his shoulder to see what it was that had Jett so moved he was willing to drop an entire conversation.

A woman, apparently.
A very beautiful woman.

At least five foot nine, the russet brunette with the same shade eyes simpered a smile. Her bow-shaped lips curved at the edges as she entered the private dining area.

First, Sargon noticed the perfect cupid’s bow on her top lip, and then the way her dainty features set off the rest of her face. High cheekbones, and perfectly arched brows. She swayed a little when she walked—some women learned how to do that, and others were just born with the ability to look sensual when they moved.

This woman was clearly in the latter group.

Her sway drew his gaze down over her body—a trim waist, hips with enough curve to grab onto, and legs for days. All covered by a tight, black body-con dress. The silver shoes, ones that matched the color of the serving plate in her hand, set the entire ensemble off for her.

It was not the first time Sargon had seen the girls in the restaurant wearing their uniform. It was the first time Sargon had seen this woman wearing it, and she looked far better than any of them, frankly.

To him, anyway.

Sargon was not the type to be silenced by a woman, or the look of her. He was not a boy who got his cock tied up over a woman.

He might enjoy letting this one do it to him, though.

“Where is Rowena?” Jett asked.

The woman’s gaze lingered on Sargon’s face for a moment, and then jumped back to Jett. Her voice sounded like a melody when she spoke. “Rowena and Chase had a bit of a falling out. I am here to serve you today, sir.”

The woman smiled. “I know your name. I thought it appropriate to address you respectfully unless you wished for me to do differently.”

Jett smiled widely—clearly pleased with the woman.

“Call me Jett.”

“Sure, Jett.”

Jett cocked a brow. “And what’s your name?”

“Cozen, but you may address me with Zen, if you prefer. I don’t mind either.”

“Cozen,” Sargon said.

All eyes drifted in his direction. He couldn’t help himself but to look up at the woman. For the first time since she had walked into the room and looked at him, her eyes were back on his face. Piercing within their russet pools. Pinning him in place.

“To obtain by deception,” Sargon added. “That’s what the word means.”

Cozen nodded. “So I have been told, although all the name has given me is a lot of strange stares when people ask me about it.”

Jett laughed, drawing the attention back to him for the moment. “Interesting.”

“I’m glad you like it, Jett.”

Sargon’s throat felt damn tight for a reason he couldn’t name. This woman carefully chose her words with every single sentence. He didn’t miss it. She offered Jett something the man liked in women—submission. The ability to be the person in control, and above everyone else around him.

“It is a strange name, though,” Jett murmured. “Seems that’s a common theme in my life lately. Meeting people with strange names, I mean.”

Cozen laughed.
It too was a musical sound.
Like wind chimes, really.

“I don’t understand,” Cozen said.

Jett gestured in Sargon’s direction, saying, “His name is Sargon. Sargon Makri. But don’t call him Sarg, as he doesn’t like it.”

Cozen laughed again, and her hand came down to brush against Jett’s shoulder over his suit jacket. Her loose, wavy hair fell over her shoulder and exposed the delicate line of her throat. Her skin looked soft, and sweet.

He bet it would taste just like that, too.

It was in that moment that Sargon finally understood the strange burst of heat radiating through his bloodstream.

He was jealous over this woman.
He had no reason to be.
Yet, there he was.

Dirty Talking Cowboy (#1 Kinky Spurs) Stacey Kennedy

by Stacey Kennedy
SMP Swerve
Publication Date: June 5, 2018
ISBN: 9781250137203 Price: $3.99

Emma Monroe has returned to River Rock, Colorado, after the death of her grandmother. Now she’s inherited a farm full of abused animals and she’s working as a waitress at the local hotspot, Kinky Spurs. The last thing Emma wants in her life is a man, as she’s still recovering from a recent heartbreak. But when a sensual and powerful cowboy, Shep Blackshaw enters her life, Emma begins to want things she shouldn't.

Shep knows sex shouldn’t be on his mind. He’s got a world of responsibility on his shoulders. He’s attempting to save his late father’s cattle ranch, Blackshaw Cattle Company, from foreclosure. But Emma’s heated reactions to his touch make ignoring her impossible. She’s the perfect distraction to make him forget that his father’s company is a sinking ship.

While their nights only heat up, soon emotions become tangled into the mix. Shep’s not only giving Emma the hottest nights of her life, he’s also healing her heart. With every encounter, she forgets her heartbreak. With every naughty adventure, she stops mourning the life she left behind. And with every dirty word whispered from Shep’s mouth, she stops thinking of all the reasons why she shouldn’t fall for him. But when the past comes to claim Emma, she’ll need to choose between the life she thought she wanted and the life she’s grown to love with Shep. How will she say no to forever with a dirty-talking Cowboy?

4 Stars

Come to River Rock to mend your broken heart and get roped in by a Dirty Talking Cowboy.

Emma is a high flyer whose broken heart has brought her to River Rock where she is working in a bar, when not tending to wounded animals.

Shep is sex on legs and when he aims at a target, he never misses.

Emma has just inherited her grandmother's farm and has left the city with a broken heart. From the first time that Shep sets eyes on her, he knows that she is special. The way he looks at her, renders her breathless, but she isn't going there again. Not after her recent breakup! After winning the "rope them in contest" at Kinky Spurs, she resists his propositions.

She has an accident the next day and finds Shep at her bedside when she wakes up in the hospital. She is a bit embarrassed as he just starred in her most erotic dream. As she needs close observations, he is only too happy to play "nurse." From there they form a comfortable friendship which turns into erotic sessions. Then feelings start to set in. Will Emma give them a chance or will she return to the city?

Shep easily takes on the role of protector even when he is having his own trouble with the family business. He helps Emma with Bentley, a broken and wounded horse and has an affinity with animals in general. I like the parallel in the concept, where Bentley and Emma are wounded and unable to trust, and how Shep has the ability to gain their trusts. It's an erotic romance with lots of love and compassion. Shep's brothers are interesting characters and I look forward to reading their stories.

I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

On Highland Time by Lexi Post

Historical Scifi Romance

For fans of sexy Scottish Highlanders who know how to treat a woman like a lady.

When someone changes history, affecting the future, Diana Montgomery, the most experienced agent of Time Weavers, Inc., travels back to 1306 Scotland to change it back. Her mission, to find the culprit and ensure a minor clan chief dies in battle as he originally had.

Diana is well-prepared to infiltrate the small MacPherson clan. What she’s not prepared for is Torr MacPherson, the ruggedly handsome warrior with a kind heart and a steadfast loyalty—the Laird she’s supposed to ensure dies.

4 Stars

Time Weavers Inc is a secret organisation with a team of time travellers. This installment goes from 21st century to 12th century Scottish Highlands.

Diana is one of the most disciplined travellers who considers the Time Weavers to be family after having lost her loved ones.

Torr is the Laird of the Montgomery clan and is a loyal supporter of Robert the Bruce who is currently under threats from the English Crown.

Diana's mission is to travel back in time to the 1300s to stop a Disruptor from changing the sequence of events during a battle. With her expertise, she blends in well, but it's difficult to adhere to all the rules as it's a small clan. Keeping her distance from clan members is proving to be difficult as they are a close knit and friendly bunch. She is quite taken by Torr and he is fascinated by her. As much as she tries to avoid him, interacting with him is rather impossible and they soon embark on a passionate affair. He doesn't believe in serious relationships as getting close to anyone only results in pain. She can't allow herself to fall in love as she has to return to the present time once her mission is accomplished. Can she allow him to meet his fate to complete her mission, or will her feelings get in the way? Either way, pain and sorrow are bound to follow.

I really enjoyed this take on time travelling. The events and sceneries are so vividly portrayed that I felt transported to the time and place. Torr is gentle, loyal and loving. Diana is kind and compassionate. The secondary characters are very well defined and it's nicely paced. The romance between Torr and Diana looks as though it's doomed from the start, but despite the difference in time, love triumphs. An innovative and compelling storyline.

I received an eARC and the views expressed are my own.

It's All About the Duke (#3 The Rakes of St James) Amelia Grey

Amelia Grey

Historical Romance

Nearing thirty, the Duke of Rathburne is finally ready to make amends for the wager that caused him and his best friends such scandal―but taking on a ward who needs a husband is a feat he’s not sure he can manage. The last he saw of Miss Marlena Fast, she was a spirited little ruffian, not the sort of bride most bachelors on the marriage mart sought. But one glance at the lovely lady she has become is enough to convince him otherwise…

Orphaned young and shuffled from family to family, Marlena counts on her fierce independence and quick wits to keep herself content. Being the responsibility of a notoriously wicked duke who upended so many lives is an unexpected challenge when she realizes he arouses her decidedly feminine desires. Marlena must be careful. She has her own scandalous secret to protect. If he finds out, will it shatter her chances of a happily-ever-after with the notorious rake?

3 Stars

This last book in the series is centred around the last of The Rakes of St James.

Rath is the Duke of Rathburne and his reputation is still plagued by his insensitive wager. He is now trying compensate for the effects of the prank.

Marlena lost her parents at a young age and has been living with various families. Currently, she lives with her cousin Justine and preparing for her first season.

In a moment of drunkenness, Rath agrees to become Marlena's guardian. He had a brief encounter with her when she was an unruly twelve year old. She has grown up to become an independent and witty woman. Marlena being his ward, he is obliged to introduce her to the ton and marry her off. In spite of his good intentions, he finds that he wants her for himself. Not a good idea! She realises that he isn't the rake she has despised for most of her life and feels attracted to him, but her secret is a barrier.

I like the interactions between Rath and Marlena and the slow development of their romance. They both have admirable qualities in their own ways. Marlena's loyalty to her friends and what she is prepared to sacrifice is honourable. It's a good concept, but the pace is rather slow and doesn't pick up until the last third of the book. Some of the dialogues are too modern for the regency period and I found that to be a bit of a spoiler. The unravelling of the mystery gossip author brings some excitement to the story. Although I like the premise of the story, the pace and some of the content are offputting.

I received a complimentary eARC and the views are my own.
